My uncle was sent to study in the philipines and we had some friends there,
so they took care of him, gave him a tour of manila, and he was guest of honour
at the Dinner.

only problem is that the main course was DOG.

In retrospect, one of the saddest days of my life, was the day I picked up my former landlord from Jilib from an address in Los Angeles and took him for a visit with my wife and I and a car tour around the world that I knew. He was in the States for study and a tour of agricultural establishments and experimental farms. I took him to a restaurant above San Bernardino where you could look out over the lights in the valley. We were hungry and ordered. He explained uncomfortably that he could not eat this food. It had never been an issue for me in his household or in Somalia; we had never discussed religion, and at that point I still did not understand the nuances. I was highly embarassed, and remain so to this day.

That was the late summer of 1969 and I never heard from him again.

One time Me and this guy that i don't know much went to Chippotle. He ordered first and pointed out at red beans. I told the guy that it has pork, but he said ' I know laakiin fck it'. I repeated that it has Pork on it, he replied ' Waa macaan and I am hungry . That was soo funny

I've seen Somali guys drink alcohol, smoke weed, bang chicks and do everything under the sun but I've NEVER seen one eat pork in my life. Infact the only MUSLIM I've seen eat pork was this one Iranian Shiica kid who was pretty much builaa deen anyway. Even the most secular wildest Muslims never eat pork because of the natural taboo from when We're kids. I'm shocked, DISGUSTING.

It was not three stars or anything, but it was a decent restaurant. You could have a beefsteak or deep-fried shrimp. Halibut. Malts. Bread. I think a Muslim more familiar with the menu could have found items that were not Haraam.

Under the circumstances, we had a quick hamburger and fries and left. He sipped at a glass of water while we ate, and wouldn't touch even the fries.

I was sensitive to the doofar taboo while I was in Somalia. I found a nice set of wart hog tusks under a rock shelter when I was at Tallex. I discarded them ( and have regretted it ever since) when a local Somali pointed out what they were.

There was a Volunteer at Jilib before me. He left a can of pork and beans in the kerosene refrigerator I ended up just using for dry storage. It seems to me one of my Somali friends wanted to see what pork tasted like and I gave it to him. I remember it as being just some white fat with the beans, so it couldn't have tasted like anything good. Anyhow, I never touched pork while I was in Somalia and really didn't miss it.

I did not mean to suggest that I was only offering my landlord pork. I was ignorant; I hope not totally unobservant.

You subscribe to the notion that what's xaraan is macaan? Dude, you got it completely wrong. What's xaraan is actually disgusting and harmful. Let's take an example in khamri; is it more macaan than fruit juice, milk shake, tea, etc? Drinking khamri makes you stink disgustingly (including your skin).
