Yusuf spent four years studying in the United Arab Emirates and elsewhere in the Middle East. Later he traveled to West Africa and studied in Mauritania, Medina, Algeria, and Morocco under such scholars as Sheikh Murabit al Haaj; Sheikh Baya bin Salik, head of the Islamic court in Al-'Ain, United Arab Emirates; Sheikh Muhammad Shaybani, Mufti of Abu Dhabi; Sheikh Hamad al-Wali; and Sheikh Muhammad al-Fatrati of Al Azhar University in Cairo, Egypt[citation needed]. After more than a decade abroad, he returned to the United States and earned degrees in nursing from Imperial Valley College and religious studies at San Jose State University. In 1996, Yusuf co-founded the Hayward, California-based Zaytuna Institute, dedicated to the revival of Islamic Sciences and the preservation of traditional teaching methods.
Jazzakallah, for telling K. I wonder though, how influential is/was this to him and his lectures?

He never claims to be a Sufi and I've never detected Sufi ideologies in his lectures, but he does claim to be an admirer of Sh. Al-Ghazali who was a famous Sufi sheikh. I've his 40 hadith narratives by Sh. Nawawi and everything he says is backed up by Sahih hadiths.
Also, some of the scholars he studied under e.g. Sheikh Muhammad al-Fatrati of Al-Azhar University are not Sufi. Listen to him with a cautious ear as you would any other Sheikh.

At the age of 17, in 1977, Hanson converted to Islam in Santa Barbara, California, after having a near-death experience in a car accident which led him to read the Qur'an and eventually become a Muslim.

Patriot,
He's all right, Yusuf Islam is a major Sufi, never saw Hamza Yusuf claiming to be one. My policy is take what is good, leave what is questionable/controversial.
suga-n-spice,
Here is English Qur'an translation by JD Hall, he's very good:
Subhanallah. Now your spreading Sufism. Now you become a sufi lover after getting tired of insulting Saudi Arabia. This Innovator Hamza Yusuf and his Zaytune Institute are propagators of Sufism.
