Tammy,

I am glad that you want your children to interract with their kind but I would intend to warn you that bringing your children to somalis would take them a way from islam. Basically, somali culture is anti-islamic, barbaric and full of hate. They would soon learn to love their tribe and hate other somalis tribes just because of who they are. So my advice to you is to bring your children as good muslims but not as somalis. YOu don't need to teach them somali language. I haven't seen anything good in somali language other than hatred and tribe ideology. Moving to Syria or Emirates to teach them islam is good.

I am a somali by mum and Dad but I am planning to raise my kids way far away from somali community so they can be descent muslims. somali culture

Tammy,

I think the best teacher of your kids would be their father.. that and one trip during the summer.. to Kenya/Somalia might do them well.

Well up until 9th grade I have met one Somali family who lived near us for like a year. Couldn't complete a sentence in Somali then we moved closer to my grandma and cousins who were really fluent in the language and the culture. It was difficult at first, but our Grandma(she moved in with us then) made us speak only Somali when she was around, then my parents made it a requirement to do the same. That eventually helped but when I got to university and got really exposed to other Somali youth, it was eye opener but rather embarrassing, b/c most of the time, I would be the only soul who was out of touch with her culture and language. However, that interaction with my people helped me tremendously, I still have an accent when I speak somali ( like a foreigner who learned a lang lol) but I'm hoping it will improve with time and effort. Also, SNET has helped me in my writing skills.

children who learned a language before puberty tend to lose their accent, while children who learned after puberty tend to keep an accent
