Re: Engineering Majors ?
Somalistan,
Berkley is a great school and at the same time its public university so if your are from California it won't cost you that much.
Hauflower,
I always wonder why people are scared of MATH. Wallahi math is the easiest if you give it the time. All you need to do is understand the foundation of the course. Math is formula based, which requires for you to understand what the question is asking.
I used to hate Biology and literature and I would ask the teacher at the beginning of the course that I would need all the help I can get.

Re: Engineering Majors ?
WEll I use to live in Philly and was going to school there until a friend of mine told me good things about Berkely. I went there for a week to get California ID. I moved the following year and enrolled. I have never left ever since. Yeah its' one of the most respected schools in the United States.
Re: Engineering Majors ?
I've always been perplexed at how Engineering got this reputation of being exceptionally demanding when it comes to mathematics. If these courses are representative of Engineering math requirements, then we have a good example of reputation leading ahead of the real deal.S-D-M wrote: My Mathematics Courses
Calculus 1,Calculus 2,Calculus 3,Differential Equations,Probability, Statistics linear Algebra
I did Economics with concentration in Development. While we all know Economics relies heavily on mathematical models, most people however never see Economics and Engineering as being equally challenging when it comes to mathematics. I was taken by surprise when I read the program requirement for Economics. Here is the mathematical courses I had to take:
1st Year:
1. calculus 1 and Algebra 1.
2nd Year:
1. Calculus 1 and Algebra 1 are merged into a new course called Math for Econ analysis whose content was about 75% calculus, 25% Algebra
2. Two 200 level Stat and Probability courses
3rd Year:
No math courses
4th Year:
1. 400 level Stat and probability course, amalgamation from second year stat and prob courses
2. 400 level Math for Econ... same deal as in 200 level, 3-to-1 calculus to algebra break up
3. Unique economics branch of mathematics called Econometrics. This field is sub-branch of Statistics and Probability but it is more tailored to economics.
That's a total of 8 math courses I had to take and take it from me some of them were quite challenging, especially math for Econ analysis courses. I'm sure there are other non-Engineering programs that are as mathematically challenging, if not more. Methinks the difficulties students face with Engineering comes not from mathematics but from the other courses.

Re: Engineering Majors ?
I am Majoring in Engineering Design( Also Manufacturing design)
Geometric dimensioning and Tolerance
Engineering Drawing and Blue Print reading
Auto Cad
Analytic Geometry
Concepts in Calculus (1 AND 2)
Solidworks2007 and Pro-Engineer Software modeling(Laboratory)
Physics(One and two)
Trigonometry and advanced Probability(the most challenging ever)
Statistics
Finite Element Analysis , Product Data Management (PDM), and advanced surfacing tools.
Project management(one and two)
Product analysis
Drill press, engine lathe, vertical mill, cutoff and contour saws, and surface and cylindrical grinders(Laboratory)
The most challenging is gone, all I have left is the theories and actual designing

Re: Engineering Majors ?
I have always loved engineering. But I have always loved being a doctor more. If I was in any other path then what I am now I would want to be Civil or Industrial engineer.

Re: Engineering Majors ?
Voltage, How good is your mathematical aptitude? If you are not good at Geometry and Math, you aren't going far in Engineering. Most people that dropped out from my college all sucked at Calculus and Trigonometry
But MD is the ultimate dream field. If you can manage to finish your MD, The next five generation of your family will be rich. Not to mention the fact that you will be the only MD in your family tree( I am assuming)

One of my brother's did Petroleum Engineering

Re: Engineering Majors ?
We need more engineers. Kudos to those doing it.
Biomedical engeneering is good and very lucrative.

Re: Engineering Majors ?
Engineering is hard!
I was going for Electrical engineering, but when I have seen the requirement of Math and Science, I had to take break from college and think about it, whether I need to take a risk, and go for four more years of Math and Science.
I did two year AA, now I can go to any major I want, and alot of majors will just admit me with what I already did, but engineering will require me to finish about 12 more courses!
Plus, alot of cheap engineers are being imported from India, and they do it for less money!
Alot of retired engineers are security guards now!
America and Europe are already developed coutries, but in places like Africa, Engineers are scarce commodity and are needed very much. If you are an engineer, go apply jobs in Dubia, they are building alot of projects there, and they pay alot of money!

Re: Engineering Majors ?
I graduated Electrical Engineering.
Re: Engineering Majors ?
A lot of people think that the hardest thing about engineering is the math, or maths as you would say in the UK
That's just the language of the theories, I think the main thing is really understanding the theory & concepts. A lot of people can do the math, but still cannot understand what the theory means.
Math is just the analogy you use to describe something, or communicate its behavior, and can help you predict how something behaves. So, if you can manipulate equations and formulas but not get the basic fundamental principles it won't help too much.
