They took Kismayo without firing a shot because Hiraale didn't want to hurt the citizenry, he did the right thing and deployed his army outside the city, where the UIC also did the right thing and met him out there.
...and beat his forces very badly. There were moments when Hiiraale's militia made it as far as Kismayo but eventually they were driven to Bu'alle. They fought again at Bu'alle where Hiiraale vowed to drive them back and retake Kismayo, and the fighting went on for weeks. He lost, and Bu'alle also fell to the UIC. There was that famous massacre of POW's in Bu'alle you will recall. Another mistake, that cost them a lot of good will.
There was a vicious back and forth war for another two months where the UIC moved north, but by then the Ethiopians had arrived and stationed a big force in Bardhere.
