I had this discussion with my mom the other day about marrying a somali or a non-somali.
My sentiment was that I would get along much more with a canadian/american than a european/arab. If I was to meet a somali person from say Switzerland, and a regular second gen. canadian...I would have much more in common with the Canadian than the somali. Soley based on environment.

In all truthness, I get along with second generation canadians...ones just like me (parents migrated to canada) alot more than a somali person who lives in another country. Im a product of my enviornment for the most part. Wheather that env. be school, home, work, either way it shapes my life and my attitudes.

i personal share more with somali no matter where in the world they are from or whether they are second generation american or canadian, then my next door white britishfamily whom have known for 16 years. the reason is simple the things i share with somalis are not product of the environments or anything artificial, it is something that is natural and everlasting. which are mother tongue, culture, religion, country and a common destiny.
marrying a western foreigner (whether white or black) would mean i could see my mother in law sunbathing in my garden, it would mean my brother in law discussing porn and his love affairs with me, it means your sister in law hitting on you when your wife is away...so i'll stick with my backward somalis thank you

To me, it seems that when I say a forginer, you automatically see a white person. Who says the person has to be black or white? Since when are there only two races in the world?
Secondly, you were lucky enough to have been to your home country as a teenager or an adult. It would give you a bigger connection to your people. Which is another point that I made. I dont have the luxury of living and growing up around somali ppl. And if I did, I WOULD have somethign in common with them because of how we grew up. Im not saying I dont have anything in common with somali ppl period. I just dont have alot in common with somali ppl outside of my country.
Ive met somali ppl from other countries and based on my expriences, I had very little in common with them.
And I just wanted to mention that there are alot of muslim people in this country and if I married someone who is not somali....why does ur mind automatically fwd to thinking that the person is not muslim?
