I've read about the Waaq (sky god) which is an old Kushtic religion that was practiced by many of the tribes in East Africa like the Oromos. Some have even suggested Somalis also worshipped this god because of the prevalance of this word in alot of Somali sayings.

This is on an Oromo site and is part of an explanation of the Waaq religion.

I was told that the Somalis are those who accepted the invitation to "soo gal" Islam, and the Gallas were those that said "no'", or "galla". Actually, there aren't many mentions of "Somalis" as such, until the 16th century.

Modern Oromos have as many or more Christian and Muslim adherents as followers of the old gadas, but it's still a living religion.

I can't believe some of you aren't interested in what Somalis worshiped if any, prior to Islam.

I believe one of the most regretful things in our culture is the oral tradition of keeping history. As a direct result we know very little about our real history, most of what we know today is based on what Arabs and Gaalo wrote about us.

I for one would have loved to read about how Somalis lived prior to Islam and what motived them in their lives.

I really dislike thinking like this. Knowledge is a very wonderful thing to have. Just because you feel insecure about our people's rich history outside the religion of Islam is very ignorant on your behalf. I personally enjoy gaining all knowledge about my people. And Somali culture and religion before Islam is extremely interesting because it sheds light on whether we have transferred some of those old religious beliefs before Islam into the modern day.

There is alot of evidence that all cultures always transmit some of their old beliefs into new faiths they acquire. For example, the celebration of Christmas (on December 25th) is nothing more than the continuation of the pagan Roman celebration Saturnalia for the Supreme God of the Romans, Saturn. I'm just wondering if there are similair phenomena among Somalis when it comes to the old pagan religions before Islam.

If anything all oral history points to the fact that Somalis have always been divided by clan. Islam did nothing to unite Somalis. As we can even see from today, religion does nothing more than stoke the fire to division EVERYWHERE in the world.
