Not true.. ppl/students were paid.. of course it was not enough..just like any 3rd world country.. but there was salary.
And whats wrong with doing some national service?? Americans did it.. almost the entire world is either directing their youth towards such programs..

So did most of my older bros, before they were sent to the states to study..

See even well off families sent their kids to do the national service.
