In the book she talks about Somalis as a whole, but I think the Masaai comment is about soldiers and guides and other male pioneers. Most people will never believe but it is right there in that book, Somalis owned section of Nairobi when the Bantus were nowhere in sight. Somalis, Masaai, the English, and the Indians that came with the British, each had their own sections of the city.
