June 26th, 1960 is when the British left that area and there was a state of Somaliland :som: which united with the Italian Somalia on July 1st, 1960.

I don't believe in 18th of May,

Somaliland was colonized by the British and than it became independent in 26th of June 1960. It has been free and independent since.
