Somali has different types of dialects? Never knew this, I thought it was a very unified language, what is the most widely understood dialect?

Af Reer Mudug, it's the accent spoken by the higher class Somalis.

Judging from your Somali sentence, you're actually quite good. One visit to Somalia for a two-month stay and you'll be fine.

Hi again,

I’ve been studying from a book called 'The Somali Language' by C.R.V. Bell published in 1953 which was recommended by a friend.
Somali grammar is so easy I was astonished by it (or as the English would call it 'peanuts') compared to the German or Icelandic grammar systems which I both mastered. I noticed that Somali is actually a very limited language concerning the vocabulary (there are no more than about ~30.000 words, and a lot of modern words are just English loanwords or simply are explanatory) but the tricky part are the enormous amount of idioms or how one word could mean several things.

Two things I never really knew before reading some Somali grammar books, Somali is such a nomad’s language many words and idioms have nomadic roots and the Somali language has no official spelling, which I found very odd! The script is purely phonetic which makes things easy.

Wish me the best of luck on my endeavor to concur the Somali language!

What tribe is your father?

In order to get help from the right people we need to know what he is.

Most Somali people are pretty good with their language (fluent, vocab etc.) but are so bad in the grammar department, just one week of studying it and looking at some Somali websites makes your eyes hurt (as in that they're bad in their own language). You could most likely find no more than 50 people in the whole of London who could write Somali in a correct matter.

I don't think my dad's clan has anything to do with this subject, but if you are that curious he is from the Darod clan.

You're right.

Most Somalis tend to believe that oral proficiency is all that really matters. My writing is rudimentary, but I speak like a poet.
