No. When the installation begins, you are given the option to shrink (resize) your Windows partition to make enough space for LinuxMint. This is the partitioner:

After you finish installtion and reboot, you will be presented with a boot loader from which you can choose which operating system (including your Windows) to boot:

You can use a USB, CD or DVD to make the installation. Using a USB is faster. There's a USB software called Unetbootin, which you can use to burn LinuxMint's iso into the USB. It's worth to not that you can use the USB/CD/DVD as a Live-CD, meaning you can use and test (including browse the internet) LinuxMint without installing to your hard disk.

Intellectual laziness + Hatred for Abdiwahab = paranoia.

AR1223,

I am glad to see that you like LinuxMint. I got into Linux when I was given an UBuntu live disk.

I fell in love with:

1. The hundreds of free apps
2. The lack of viruses, spyware
3. The speed of a light OS unlike XP
4. The amount of customization opportunities
5. The excellent stability of the system

I specifically like the fact the Linux protects you from some Somali websites that try to infect your pc/laptop with spyware, malware, etc.

AR1223,

Yep, some sites have drive by downloading of trojans. I never understood why they can't invest in proper security.

I find Avast to be very effective in dealing with trojans emanating from those sites

For those of you who have not managed to try LinuxMint, this is a brief tutorial. First, you need to download 1 program and 1 file. The program is called Unetbootin, and you can get it here:

http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/

Download and save it in your desktop or a directory of your choice. Next, download the LinuxMint-7.iso file. Choose a nearby (North America, Europe, Asia or Oceania) link, and download the LinuxMint-7.iso file:

http://www.linuxmint.com/edition.php?id=38

Depending on your connection, it could take 15-60 minutes. Save the file in your desktop or a directory of your choice. Next, insert a USB stick of at least 1 GB in the drive and format it:

Next, double click the Unetbootin program:

Click the button next where you read ISO. Then choose the file LinuxMint-7 and click open:

It should take a few/several minutes to copy the file into the USB. You can reboot after it finishes:

Image

While rebooting, as soon as you see the logo (Compaq, Sony, HP, etc) or BIOS of your computer/laptop, press the button (Esc, F1, F2, or F11, depending on your computer/laptop) that brings you to the boot menu. It gives you choice to boot the USB. Choose the USB and boot it. After a few minutes, you automatically login to LinuxMint. You will see a few icons on the desktop, one named Install. Before you click that, click the green menu on lower left-side. Type gparted in Filter:

It will launch the program that you can use to resize your Windows partition:

Choose the partition and click the resize button. That brings you to this:

Choose at least 3GB for LinuxMint. When finished, go back to the desktop and click the Install icon. The rest should be a piece of cake.

Arabman i'm completely sold. I'm actually downloading it right now and will install it when I get home. Even AW mentioned it a while I forgot about it and didn't try it but it looks really good.

Many experts have written rave reviews about LinuxMint. Everything works out of the box. I have connected my USB laser printer to the pc, and I was using it right away; it quickly loaded the appropriate module and that was it.

No, but the repository has about every software you could need. In rare cases, you may have to compile.

AR & Gatspy,

I fell in love because all the codecs I needed were there out of the box. Ubuntu was a nightmare when it came to Codecs.

Nothing sucks like having Papa Abdiwahab blistering because he cant listen to his Been Been Sii because the Realplayer Codec is missing.
