If I am truly honest to myself, as much as I would love to say a Muslim is closest to me regardless of ethic identity; I would be lying. I can relate to gaal Somali (as long as they still have cultural sensibility) a lot more than lets say a Bangladeshi or an Iraqi. Sad, but true.

Elaborate why "the two cannot be separated." Are you implying Soomaalinimo is on par with or as sacred as Islam?

Argue Somalinimo by all means, but our "African identity" means nothing. Find one Somali who cares about Africa and I'll show you one who's been living in the West for too long.

We're not culturally African, we share nothing with these people outside of our geographical location. The only African countries we share similarities with, are in the same situation as us.

Thanks to idiots like "Professor" Samatar, we have AU Ugandan generals calling us their "brothers". Africans are getting the false idea we want anything to do with them.

As for this question, no Somalinimo does not compare in any way to Islam, it never will.

Let's just say there was some fire on that 2nd day of the conference. You gotta come next year the brothers were seriously underrepresented.

As for the statement, he said we are African first; that we are African before we were Muslim. Well, that is one viewpoint but I don't think you can answer the question like that.

We were created as Muslims. Islam is the truth of our Creator and therefore it is eternal and we are Muslims beginning with the creation of Adam. Our ancestor Adam was Muslim but not Somali.

Somali is a distinction that came later than the distinction of being Muslim:

"O mankind! We created you from a single (pair) of a male and a female, and made you into nations and tribes, that ye may know each other (not that ye may despise each other). Verily the most honored of you in the sight of Allah is (he who is) the most righteous of you. And Allah has full knowledge and is well acquainted (with all things). "

This verse clearly tells us that we were created into nations and tribes after our creation and we were created as Muslims.
i agree with you and in this aayah made it very clear that even before we became who we are or our race, Allah made us promise that we're muslims and worship no one but Him.
And remember when your Lord brought forth from the Children of Adam, from their loins, their seed (or from Adam's loin his offspring) and made them testify as to themselves (saying): "Am I not your Lord?" They said: "Yes! We testify," lest you should say on the Day of Resurrection: "Verily, we have been unaware of this."
so yes we were muslims before even we know our fathers and mothers, leave alone our race or regional place.

Loool Advo,
Dont make me feel worse than I already do. Maybe its because you lived in the States and its different there. In the UK, all Muslims wear their cultures on their sleeves, and even have their own mosques where you get eyeballed if you go in thinking its a place of prayer.

Morpheus,

No. Thats not what I meant. I meant that a lot of Somali practices, manners etc are infact Islamic too. Therefore it can be argued that one cannot be Somali without having quite a large Islamic influence, manners etc.

Surrender, Gedoboy, you are right.

Gedogirl- eedo a Muslims culture should be Islam. However, the closeness we speak of is not linguistics, culture, or things of that nature. It is simply which bond do you hold to a higher degree, that of which you share the same language and look with someone or of which you share the same faith and oneness in Allah with someone? I would rather be a Chechnyan-Muslim then a Marexaan-Gaal if give only those choices. The way I see it Somalinimo and Islaamnimo is hand in hand.Truly thou our dhaqan in terms of marriage, divorce, manners, respect, and many more are Islamic so being a Somali is being a Muslim.

But that contradicts what you earlier stated that a Somali can be gaal as long as he/she still has cultural sensibility.

Sadeboi, eedo you said if I were to choose between a muslim and a non muslim who would it be...I said in a perfect world it would be a Muslim of any ehnicity....however, in the city I was raised in, Muslims shut each other out, occassionally even in the masjids. So what Im saying isnt that I love would always choose a Somali gaal over a Chechen etc Muslim...its that this is the only choice Ive been given so far.
With regards to my own identity its would be Islam first, Somali second, British third...African doesnt come into it yet.

Morpheus,

I said 'it can be argued' (because many do) and in my earlier post I said that I didnt want to argue this point because it can get confusing, as you have demonstrated here. You can be a gaal by not believing in Islam, but you are still a Somali as you will inadvertedly behave in the same way as Muslim Somalis do. Hence why i said that Xisri is unsomali and unIslamic.

What are a few/several examples of gaal Somalis behaving in the same way as Muslim Somalis do?

I didn't mean to put you in trouble by asking you that difficult question. In the future, you don't have to answer my question that can put you in trouble. Just ignore them.
