Yeah this is a crazy situation for anyone to be in but somewhat expected. Any young Somali wishing to travel outside of America is kind of in trouble. But it is weird how it is easier for American Somali males to leave more so then non-American Somalis to enter.

The government needs to go a step further, sadly, and aggressively monitor all the Somali businesses and individuals who donate to these organizations and arrest sympathizing clerics.

There should be a Zero tolerance for such destructive behaviors.

Nothing wrong with being a Pariah state. The West is becoming increasingly irrelevant.

Look at Eritrea, North Korea, Venezuela. For all the "sanctions" and threats thrown against them, they're all relatively well off. There is nothing the US can offer you can't get somewhere else.

Let us be fair here, it is a combination of two reasons:

1. Racial profiling..Some people do that, some people are just Racists.

One of my Yemeni neighbors has been here 30 years and is a long-time US citizen. Four of his children have been born here. He is past president of the Yemeni Grocers' Association and the largest mosque in Oakland, and is currently vice president of the San Francisco janitors' union. He has personally recruited over a dozen Yemeni-American police cadets and is in an FBI "armed citizen" training program.

After nearly a year one of his son's Yemeni wife has still not been granted a visa.

Two weeks ago he called me from a local recycling facility where they would not accept his recycling, saying it had already been processed and lhad been stolen. He had called the police, who would not help him, saying the facility could refuse to deal with anyone. It was obvious to both of us the reason was that one of his daughters was with him in hijab. Neither the facility nor the police would accept my witness that the girls had collected the recycling from union parties and clan gatherings and had smashed the cans to save storage space, the same as I do.

He eventually took the recycling to another facility owned by the same company and was able to turn in his recycling without incident. But this was an offensive profiling first for both of us.

I got the company's e-mail address and wrote a letter explaining the circumstances and requested an apology for my neighbor. No response.

I told my other neighbors here, who were as upset as I was, and we are now planning to document what happens when other hijabified ladies take their recycling to the offending facility. The union lawyer is also a member of the Oakland city coucil, who says there may well be a legal case here based on the fact they have no reasons posted for refusing recycling.

Security is one thing, but this is just absurd. As an American, I am ashamed. And my neighbors, who are Catholic and Baptist, are the same.

Keep your fingers crossed guys. This is breaking new ground for me, but, despite the clandestine and open damage done to the Constitution by the Bush Administration, the vast majority of Americans are still highly aware of civil rights. I have to doubt that one guy at that one facility is going to get away with it indefinitely.
