Are you stupid or on drugs? In Arabia Arabs treat somalis no different than any other black African. many of our young people have never seen what somalia was like as young children. the civil war generation (0-24ish) have never seen peace and have never lived in a period of somalia being great. despite this, many of those who self-hate on a regular occurrences by denying themselves their true identity and deserved place among their people have 'issues' that they need to deal with. what these young people need is a well defined sense of self that they can be proud of. i think this could be found in the commonalities that we Somalis have (culture, Islam and music, etc, we need to place less emphasis on things that divide us as things that define what constitutes somalinimo as an identity.

However, what astounds me personally is, many people associate somalis with poverty, tribalism and backwardness, laakin in the last 10-15 years somalis have rapidly integrated among their host countries and are very successful. young people who self hate need to look beyond their ghetto streets and see just how many Somalis live in suburbia. i am personally friends with somalis who work as a stock-brokers for Barclay's and big city firms and Somalis who work as senior civil servants in Whitehall and other govt agencies etc, these people are humble and very proud of being somalis. laakin because they are busy, they dont have time to give back to the community as much as they would have liked.

We classify ourselves the way we like and thats the method we adopt, it matters to us not what a Ugandan or an English man or an Arab says about us. To the poster, you'd be surprised at how many Somalis that are doing well in the community. They hold many events... I just wish I could take part in it... I'm just too shy, I get scared that people might judge my Somali lol. Aside from me, there are plenty of young (yea, young lol) Somalis who do shows and events. You just gotta keep your eyes open.
