"Westerners have a tendencies towards achieving emotional as well as materialistic goals for their children"

Are you suggesting that somalis do not achieve emotional and materialistic goals? Are u saying somali culture is primitive in a polite manner? No, i think you are insultingly narrow minded and WRONG.

GacanSareeye is inarticulately trying to express his views of the importance of hygine and the proper child bearing. His little mind understand the importance of having children brought up correctly with attention and care. Many litter or chicklets of kids-- will leave the mother mostly --exchausted and neglectful. But i think or suspect he is mainly concerned about the physical hygine of the household rather than the spiritual hygine of the entire family. Perhaps GacanSareeye has smelled a decayed uunsi in abouts the premises and was thrown into a fit of covering his sophisicated, sensitive nostrils. 8-)

Marc, your living standards and condition is predicated on where you live and the societies/systems prevalent at that location. if someone who has the ability to support 10 children, have a clean and well fed family, have both parents present benevolently, and can afford all the necessities needed by the children, mashallah to that family. but the reality we live in the West is very different from what we had back home. their are constraints. you have to buy things for them. you have to be with them at each conjecture so they can succeed. we have to make hard choices in the West. would you rather have your family suffer b/c you have to live upto an image.

I met this family in the US. they had 8 children. one was in jail, others were failing in classes, and the girls were put in an islamic school to become better teens. but i was surprised that the father was going around places counting each one of them. to him the numbers were more important than their record. he virtually put no time and investment into making sure they succeed, while looking for a second/third wife.

Basra dabo,

you mean a decayed diapers, lying on the sides by at least couple of days, uunsi is whole another issue and mainly exists in single mother homes of at least 2 or less children. but you got the gist of the post, though i am as much concerned about spiritual/educational/parental tutoring as with the physical aspects of the home and the children. you have children, in the quranic sense, so enjoy their sight and see them prosper, and our system of living is totaly contradictory. we raise them miserly and visit them in jails in later life.

As Somalis we have a different understanding of 'emotions' and 'materialism'. Somalis mothers and fathers understand and show these emotions in a different way to how a white family might display such emotions. For instance, white families generally in an attempt to appease their children, in other words to spoil them, might overwhelm them with presents, money and tell them 'I love you honey' , but Somali parents might want to teach their children a sense of responsibility of independence and individuality and as a result might not show their children artificial displays of affection and dependence on their parents.

First of all, let me categorically prohibit u from calling me 'dabo' ---u make me uncomfortable and also cause me unneccesary mini glance of my dabo, therefore causing unnecessarily insecurities. GacanSareeye i think u have become gaalo. It is as simple as that. :x

Mr. Smith

I see u glamorize somali culture with heightened fruitful language. IT is very ironic and hypocritical as u were NOT born into somali culture.

The average child under 4 years old needs around $400/month for basic necessities like clothing, food, miscell supplies, etc in North America. That's not including shelter, utilities, transportation, and all the other stuff the household needs. If you know you're poor, spare us and do not have children. If you are ignorant, illiterate, or an under-achiever, spare the civilized world and raise the few Allah has already blessed you with. If you're a woman who can not be bothered to learn the spelling of her child's name or date of birth, consider getting spayed. If you're a dead beat male who knows he can't provide for his family, but would rather the government raise them for him, consider chopping your testicles off, because you've long ago lost wixi ragnimo ahaa.

Seriously, this is not Somalia where having many kids had economical and social benefits. Either live in the civilized world, or go back to whatever shithole you crawled out from. Family planning is not only allowed in Islam, its encouraged to space out the kids a minimum of 2 years. But try telling that to any Somali family and see the reaction. Its about quality rather than quantity.

Marc, whatever somalia had, never worked. we should definitely try something different. maybe that is our solution. alot of things are forced upon you b/c of necessity. i dont think we dont shower our kids gifts b/c its foreign but we cant afford it. i met this old guy who told me he never gave anything to his children. when i listened to him more i understood that he had another family that was starving and he had to find ways to feed them, while this other family due to their extended family had others ways of eating. so gifts are luxury of the rich or the well off. and when you have too many kids where do you get the spare to gave to all your children. this materialism and emotional schism is really an exaggeration.

I respectably disagree, owning largely to the fact that Somalis and their White neighbour do not share living standards and conditions and therefore do not enjoy the same access to opportunities. All other things being equal, perhaps if there was the same level playing-field and opportunities were open to all. However, as things currently stand, Somalis, by and large find themselves living in relatively deprived areas - where there is poor public services and lack of opportunities.
