as i understood, somali term of raaliya means: obeying/summitted women to her husband. what ever he says and do not question.

the real meaning as the word is arabic origin is: some one who is satisfied his possition or service he or she recieving.

I am serious, I actually believed a raaliyo to be a diplomat, one who negotiates without raising her voice or getting angry, someone who keeps the peace and tries to make sure that everyone is happy. I didn't think it had anything with cooking and cleaning

That's why when Nalia asked a while ago I was like there's nothing wrong with being raaliyo and if my definition were correct then yes I would be a raaliyo. Lakin now that I am starting to see what it means, being any man's shaaqalo is not in my future so no, I am not a raaliyo.

i think this whole notion of fixating on household chores to polarize women's rights has blindsided women from reaping the full benefit they can achieve from their relationships with their significant other.

to employ yourself in the capacity of diplomacy to keep the peace and make him happy...yet by the same token consider cooking and cleaning for a husband as "shaqaalo" is highly counterintuitive.

so by your definition, i think i agree in the sense that she is someone who is happy in her state of affairs while making her husband happy...

How I understood it, the people who truely needed raaliyo where the reer miyi. Having to live in the harsh conditions of the baadiye, and always traveling, you could not have two leaders, or else there would be confusion. Therefore, when a man would decide to move to a new area in the hope of finding new pasture land then the wife would have to follow as well as the kids. The women would accept the position, because she trusted that her husband who grew up as a child and learned the skills of survival from his father knew what was best. Harsh environment cannot accept disunity, so the family had to be one unit, but generally when their was abundance and survival wasn't at stake then things were very lose. In the city it is a less extreme case that was practiced.

Again I could be wrong in my own understanding.

Then that is a contract that shouldn't be easily broken. So are you saying that you agreed from the beginning that you would do the all the "cooking and cleaning"?

The reason why it comes back to the cooking and cleaning is because it is the only constant in our lives, everyone eats and everyone makes a mess, so it may come across as a fixation but it's rather a good example of how duties that should be shared are sometimes sidelined onto one party.
