We lived next door to a retired school teacher and his wife for 4 years, then for like a year, we hadn't seen the wife, just the husband. Her car was always parked in the driveway, but we never saw her. Then one day, their visiting daughter came to their house and locked herself out, came and knocked on our door to ask if she could use the phone. Then after she was done, my sister asked how her mother was doing, daughter said her mother had been dead for close to a year, cancer complications. Boy did we feel foolish after that.

Back to the topic, we shouldn't rush to judgements. Ilaaheey ha u naxariisto the poor kids, maybe it was best that way. As for the mother, its highly likely that she suffered from some sort of a mental disorder e.g. prolonged post-partum depression which can be dangerous if goes untreated. Allahu aclam.

Either case, its very tragic.

This story will now put a microscopic eye on the livelihood of most Somali women in the west and the difficult circumstances they are living in and the role many men play inthe breakdown of the family structure. How do you think a Somali would justify her actions? And essentially what role did her husband play in the tragic demise of his family? If anything, he will be needing a good lawyer too;perhaps more than she will.

sis Ismahan, I see your point and yes the man may have probably contributed to this very tragic story. But this incident has many folds and the most immediate one is about her fate. She needs to be saved from further trauma. I think judging her, the husband or somali community in general will not change anything and belong to the back seat at this very moment. This is about mentally unfit somali young lady who is behind bars. In my opinion, this should be addressed with the right tools before anything else. Unless, she was on drugs or an evil person, she needs get out very soon regardless of the trauma these little kids went through.

About the guy, he has already paid a huge price. Two of his children are dead and the rest in government care while the mother is behind bars for starving them. These kids are just kids to us but to him they have names with history to go with. I wouldn't be surprised if he goes crazy.

Subxaanallaah, Alle waa u gargaari caruurta inta kale. Let us and hope and pray husband would come and claim his kids from the child protective services and community at large should help to ensure these kids will be in Islamic upbringing and Somali household.
