How does this affect the children? The children consider their parents to be married when they are together, whether you are divorced or married is irrelevant for benefit purposes, what matters is that you are separated. Marriage is relevant to the government in terms of inheritance, tax etc for the spouses.

You're right it's something she should have known so obvioulsy there are women out there who need to be given more information about these matters. Same applies to Muslim women who marry a second time after getting an Islamic divorce and get charged with bigamy because they didn't go through the proper legal channels during their divorce.

If someone willingly goes into a relationship with a polygamous male then that's up to them however one of these women will be the 'registered' wife and she would get infinitely more rights than the others and that doesn't seem fair or logical but to each her own I guess.

How does pretending to be divorced or seperated from the father of your children so that you can get more of the tax payers money affect your children? I guess it doesn't, as long as there is enough to pay the duksi teacher all is well. But all is twisted too and that was my point.

Lying is simply lying and it does not matter who you lie to. What i meant is Somalis are not avoiding to register their marriages for any fraud purposes, you can be married and claim to be separated. Registering marriage does not give them extra benefits, just like many couples who cohabit.
