I doubt we can find a proper republic survey conducted over the last 20years. It is a historic resource survey however a decent enough reference to interpolate from.

Here's one from 1977:

That map was made in 1992. The 1992 map includes untapped mineral potential, whereas the 1977 map only includes active mines and processing centers, so in a sense the 1977 map is more realistic as to the actual economic situation.Niya wrote:What is the source/date of this map?

Tnx chap.
Areas of resource concentration is between the two rivers(Jubba and shabeelle) and their immediate vacinity. He who controls Moqadishu controls the movement of the wealth between the twin rivers.
The former republic serves no purpose to koonfur when it has the opportunity to walk away with the capital and the bulk of all the natural resource that was destined to be shared by the inhabitants of the republic.
There is greater benefit for Koonfur to secede or annul The federal republic of somalia instead of being fooled by the grand optical illusion created in 1960.

Can you fathom the possibilities

Re: Resource distribution in former republic...
I find it strange that all of the khat resources are in eastern Sanaag & Puntland and not in Waqoyi, its like those resources ended up their as part of a cruel joke.
If my people were a little more evil we'd be banking off of Hargeisa's addiction.

The North has abandunt natural resources including metalic and gemstones. You need to know the area that former geologists who did the explorations called "green gold belt". That is in the Golis mountain belt.
If people harvest the water from the rainy season, the entire Nugaal valley could turn into a river. The water from Golis mountains starting Togdheer and Sanaag go straight thru the Indian ocean thru Eyl and other valleys without any one designing proper ways of building dams and creaks that can hold the war. If it is properly managed, the northern part of the country could be easily food self sufficient. Unfortunately, we spent most of our energy is spent on khat and backward clannish nonsense.

qaad is a terrible plant to grow,
its water hungry, requires allot of fertilizer and will suck the nutrients out of the ground, while not producing anything
meaningfull..
weed on the other hand grows in all climates, and even prefers bad soil to the good soil,
and does not need much water at all, or any fertilizer or pesticides..

Re: Resource distribution in former republic...
Where do these s-netters get the idea that 5% of the world's uranium is in Somalia? The country would be invaded or forced into peace if that was the deal.

Re: Resource distribution in former republic...
This is something I found about uranium/somalia:
An addition I found in another article proves why logistics and finance was a difficulty in this project - Somalia has very little uranium and it is difficult to dig in Somalia. In addition, Iraq had a low-profile link to Somalian uranium. In 1984, Brazilian mining company Construtora Andrade Gutierrez announced a $300 million investment in a uranium mine in northern Somalia. The deal was to be financed by Banco do Brasil, and the host government agent was the Somali Arab Mining Company (Soarmico). Soarmico was itself a joint venture founded in 1978 between the Somali government, the Arab Mining Company based in Jordan, and Iraq. The project was beset by logistical and financial difficulties and it is unclear how much (if any) uranium ultimately made its way out of Somalia, especially before the country collapsed into anarchy. But you have to give Saddam credit for trying.

Re: Resource distribution in former republic...
Siciid, I've studied and compared the map carefully, the area highlighted is east of Midhiso by a small margin, notice how the fishing icon above highlights a nearby port, Maydh, which is quite a bit west of the khat icon. Its hard to tell actually, its so close to the Somaliland-Puntland border that the khat range probably covers both sides.
Don't worry, there is enough green for all of us.
