If you don't like taking oral medicine, you can always eat the foods that supply these vitamins. Fish generally has high levels of vitamin D. These days, they add vitamin D to just about anything including breakfast cereal and bars, milk, yogurt, cheese slices, etc. Vitamin D deficiency is linked to everything you can think of from body aches to depression, low energy, bowel problems, osteoporosis and brittle bone. Our dark skin makes it even harder to absorb the little sunlight we get in the Western hemisphere, making us more susceptible to all these deficiencies.

That's what you would hope - that the halal meats sold to Muslims come from small farms, owned by Muslims. But, its a small percentage that do that. Most halaal meat suppliers are the big chain meat suppliers including Tyson chicken and Craghill. Midamar and Al-Safa are the largest halal suppliers in North America, guess who their suppliers are? Its your usual farm in the midwest, Midamar is located in Iowa and I believe Al-Safa is Canadian. Today's halal meat vendor is about saving on cost, while maximizing on profit. They will get their livestock from anyone that's willing to offer them for less. So, unless its lamb or goat - chances are they are buying it from a non-Muslim farmer.

Btw, J&P Poultry out of Gainesville, GA is one of the largest chicken wing suppliers in the Southeast. They supply all the halal restaurants and most of the halal meats here, they also supply non-halal wings. There's nothing sacred anymore. Food is a major money maker and all these vendors are in it for profit, quality is often times questionable.

If you analyze these things too much, you come saying there's nothing halaal anymore. There's even a product called L-cystiene that they use in bakery products like bagels and some breads e.g. french bread. Guess what its made from? You won't believe me. Just google it, man.

My trick is eat whatever organic I can find and limit beef. Replace with fish and veggies. You live in Seattle, you guys have fish all over the place. Fish is brain food; very high on omega-3 fatty acids, great for memory, great for stamina, sex drive, testosterone, etc. Invest in it. Also, goat meat is great food; less animal fat than beef, it has good cholesterol, most likely came from a small family farm. Same thing with lamb, more fatty, but better alternative to beef. Cut back on processed foods that contain too much preservatives, they've been linked to cancer and a host of other problems.

I do drink cold milk now and even like it, but when I was younger I never did like milk. Till this day I don't drink hot milk, it is revolting to me.

I think the vitamin d deficiency is due to the climate I live in (there is not plenty of sun) and also because I cover up most of my body, so not a lot of sun again. Lastly, I don't go out of my way to eat food rich in Vitamin D.

Thanks! BTW, i found most Vitamin D to have gelatin, but Alhamdulilah, I found one that was veggie.

The meat doesn't have to be organic to be 'halal'? Unless they are injecting them with 'non-halal' stuff, like pigs fat etc? In any case it is much better to eat organic meat! Even healthier to cut down your meat intake to ONCE a week, and that one time you eat meat, it could be organic! All in all you save money and stay healthy.

I quit buying anything from the so-called Halal Shops long time ago. They are the dirtiest and filthiest places you can buy anything from. True story, one day I saw a Somali halal meat owner whose finger was bleeding yet still cutting the meat. It was kind hard to tell what blood was on the meat......There are always flies all over the place....

Awesome post! I limit my beef intake as well and stay with fish and vegetables mostly. I maintained a vegetarian diet for a while, and I usually do that immediately after Ramadan for few months, but I was advised against it .

Why were you advised against it? And exactly what were they advising against?

Are you familiar with a British nutritionist called Dr. Gillian Mckeith? Check out her website for great tips on super foods such as Brazilian nuts, goji berries and aduke beans. She also offers recipes, meal plans and a list of all the minerals a person needs on a given day. She has a show on BBC America called "You are what you eat!" You must've seen it by now, she starts off by asking her victims to provide a stool sample. She employs a controversial approach to get her points across, but very theatrical and fun to watch.

Vetrenarians have been free to develop the right products with all the essential minirals and protiens that cats and dogs need to stay healthy.
We have not been allowed that luxury, becuase big business own nearly all the farms and food production.

Cows and sheep and even chickens are not supposed to eat corn, its bad for them, makes them gain wieght and the bacteris in thier guts cannot process it very well, and you get salmonella and other bacteria like e-coli getting out of control in a corn and sorghum diet..

Cows and sheep and goats are supposed to eat grass, this way they dnt need anti-biotics to maintain their wieght as the natural diet takes care of most diseases.

Since fertilizer is used to grow corn and other plants, you are not getting the essential nutrients in the soil into the food system.
Plants need more than nitrogen, phophorus and whatever they put in fertilizers.
They may grow well but they are weak and undernourished just like us, becuase they need pesticides and herbicides to survive.
The same plants when grown organically and manure and compost used instead of fertilizer, may not grow as fast and as big, but they are hardier and can fight off most pests and other weeds on thier own without the help of humans..
They will also access the complex minerals they need from the soil...

these will get into the food and we will be more healthy as a result..

you should cut off white bread and rice as they are nutrition wise useless and they will simply fill you up and make you fat..
Whole breads, are the way and more leafy vegs like spinach..

as for grains it seems what is used as animal feed in the US , like sorghum, oats are better for you than wheat..

organic is the way..

i am lucky to get somali meat shipped from berbera in my local butcher..

This pakistan guy who was an expert on Food Hygiene gave a lecture at our mosque, after that lecture i didn't wanna eat meat wallahi. He was working with the halal authority and uk govt agencies for decades. He said he wouldn’t call our halal meat halaal at all cause of the hygiene issues and the conducts at the slaughter houses.

The nastiest was when he explained to us how they made the kebab meat.

Koronto your on another level bro, organic halaal, I thought it was already halal since most of the meat is not bought from big industrial farms, but small time muslims who have free range livestock especially goat and sheeps since they need to graze. I since stopped eating non halal meat have had to opt for vegetarian dishes, if I don't get my meat from home then I start to have some withdrawl effects.

u should try buying meat from the east side bro,places like colfax(look it up ) u will get the healthiest anmials fed nothing but grass and no stoeroids.tukwila halals waa neceesa for good once u get on these stuff.
