The Story of Qaasim Usman – better know by his nom de geurre “Nadhii Gammadaa”-
One of the benefits of his story is that it can benefit many youth living in these times, who lack substance. Or those who only strive for material gains. Born to a family of farmers of the Arsi-Oromo, Nadhii was a post secondary student in the mid 1970’s at a time when student movements were challenging the regime of Haile Selassie. When the regime was toppled in a military coup, Nadhii saw the military as merely another tool of oppression for his people, and so he went to east Hararge where Oromo guerrillas of the OLF, at that time led by Sh. AbdulKarim Ibrahim were based. He would spend the remainer of his adult life in the bush fighting the regime of Mengistu Haile Mariam.
In the mid 1980’s, he was sent on a diplomatic mission to Somalia after relations between the OLF and the Siad Barre regime had improved after a long period of hostilities. The issue stemmed from the OLF’s refusal to work with the WSLF and SALF movements and accept the name “Somali Abbo”. Anyways due to the collapse of the SALF, many of its members joining the OLF, and the decline of the WSLF the Siad Barre regime decided to maintain relations with the OLF. During his brief stay in Moqdisho, an OLF member asked Nadhii about the situation in the bush, to which Nadhii gave a memorable reply:
“I am doing something, which if you offered somebody a million dollars to do, they would never do it. But I do it with happiness. It is hard when the comrade you laughed & joked with, you lived with for so long, next thing you know you are digging his grave. When the generous family which fed you yesterday, you come back the next day and you find them slaughtered and their house burned down (by the brutal regime). But what can you do.”
On another occasion he told one of his companions that after spending over a decade in the bush walking long distances with a heavy load , “I don’t even know how to walk in a city anymore”.
OLA Base camp in Hararge (1989)
After the fall of the DERG regime in May 1991, the OLF was part of the transitional gov’t. Nadhii, as a member of the central committee was responsible for getting the country ready for elections. But the TPLF was not interested in elections, and the OLF learned that lesson the hard way in June 1992 in the now infamous deal which was betrayed. Most of the OLF central committee packed their suitcases & fled the country, abandoning the army. However Nadhii, rejoined the armed wing. The circumstances surrounding his death are not clear, but it is believed that he was killed in the fighting in the Summer of 1992.

News from back home. OLA/WBO has been present on the major highway in east Hararge south east of Dirre Dhawa. There was an incident where they set up a roadblock on the highway, checking vehicles. They pulled a person from one of the vehicles and executed them on the side of the road. It seems like they were looking for particular EPRDF cadres. Anyways, the highways have been declared “unsafe”.

Frustrated Meles purges Oromo slaves
(JT) During an annual conference of the ruling party bloc Oromo Peoples Democratic Organization (OPDO), over 120 top government officials were suddenly arrested by security forces of Prime Minister Meles Zenawi, according to a local newspaper. This has led to the dismissal of nearly half the cabinet members of the regional government of Oromia.
The OPDO Oromo officials were accused of being disloyal to the Meles government.
Based on the reunification agreement signed on September 27, 2010, the OLF Unification Committee held its meeting from March 8-12, 2011. The Committee has successfully completed the steps necessary to resolve the internal differences that have sapped the energy and resources of our people over the last three years. Accordingly, we are happy to announce that the basis for the reconciliation of OLF is finalized.
According to Ethiopia's main opposition coalition Medrek - composed of eight mostly regionally-based parties - several of its member parties have experienced a wave of arrest this week. At least 250 opposition members remain in detention, they claim.
Most of the detainees were said to be from the Oromo People's Congress (OPC) and the Oromo Federalist Democratic Movement (OFDM), two Medrek coalition partners. The OPC and OFDM are from Ethiopia's central Oromia region, which surrounds the capital, Addis Ababa.
The Medrek leadership reports that at least 217 OFDM members and 40 OPC members have been arrested during the week and that the whereabouts of most of them still were unknown.
At the same time, there are unconfirmed reports that at least 150 key members of the Oromo People's Democratic Organization (OPDO), a member of Ethiopia's ruling coalition, have been arrested on corruption charges during the same time.
Ethiopian opposition figures put all these arrests in connection with the repeated calls for Egypt-like mass protests and riots. Many of these calls have come from the key Oromia region, with the outlawed Oromo Liberation Front (OLF) repeatedly calling on Ethiopian to unite and overthrow the government of Prime Minister Meles Zenawi.
Indeed, there is a growing movement calling for mass protests in Ethiopia, inspired by the North African revolutions. Two youth groups are calling for nationwide protests on 20 May.

Ethiopia to charge 121 prisoners with terrorism
By Barry Malone
ADDIS ABABA (Reuters) - Ethiopia's government on Thursday said it was preparing to charge more than 100 prisoners with terrorism and dismissed calls by a rights groups to release them immediately.
The government said it had arrested 121 people in March and accused them of being members of the outlawed Oromo Liberation Front (OLF) rebel group.
Campaign group Human Rights Watch said the arrests were part of a government crackdown on opposition campaigners from Ethiopia's Oromo ethnic group.
Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi is Washington's closest ally in the Horn of Africa but has come under increasing criticism from rights groups accusing him of crushing dissent.
Opposition officials in the capital Addis Ababa who did not want to be named told Reuters they suspected the arrests were motivated by government fear of a public uprising.
Ethiopia's government defended the arrests and said there was no limit to how long the suspects could be held as long as they were regularly remanded by the courts.
"They are being held on suspicion of OLF membership while prosecutors prepare charges against them for terrorist activities," government spokesman Shimeles Kemal told Reuters.
"Ethiopia has the right to defend itself against terrorism and these groups have no right to question that ... Nobody was arrested only for involvement in opposition politics," he added.
Prime Minister Meles Zenawi told parliament on Tuesday that some "terrorists" were using membership of political parties to cover up their activities.
He said Eritrea was stepping up attempts to destabilise Ethiopia by arming rebel groups including the OLF.
The OLF has been fighting since 1993 for more autonomy for the Oromia region. The Oromo are Ethiopia's biggest ethnic group with 27 million out of a population of 80 million.
Oromia produces most of the coffee in Africa's biggest grower, along with oil seeds, sesame and livestock, which are all key exports.
Human Rights Watch said Ethiopia had arrested more than 200 Oromos since March.
"The authorities should immediately free the Oromo opposition members unless they can bring credible charges against them," the New York-based group said in a statement.
Opposition parties said their supporters had been arrested in recent weeks.
"We have more than 80 people detained since mid-March," Merera Gudina, leader of the Oromo People's Congress, told Reuters. "The government, however, says they are members of the OLF. The arrests are ongoing."
The main opposition coalition, Medrek, last week named 68 Oromos it said were being held without charge because of their political affiliations.
In other news, reported Apr. 3 2011 - In west Shawa, Chaaliya district, an Ethiopian gov’t official, Lammaa Waggaari, responsible for expelling Oromo students suspected of opposing the ruling party, was killed when a bomb was thrown into house by unknown assailants.
