Teams from two major cities in southern and northern Somalia will compete for the first national football cup held inside Somalia in 23 years, Radio Garowe reports.
Somali national football tournament in Puntland/Dec. 2010
The sports tournament is being jointly organized by the Somali Football Federation, the Somali Olympic Committee and the Puntland government, which administers the stable northeastern Somalia regions.
The sports event is being played at Mire Aware Stadium in Garowe, the capital of Puntland State of Somalia. On Tuesday, teams representing Nugaal (Garowe) and Banadir (Mogadishu) regions competed in the semi-final. The matched with each team scoring one goal.
An extra period of 20 minutes was added and no team scored, leading to penalties in which the Banadir team won 5-4. On Wednesday, teams representing Lower Jubba and Bari regions competed in the second semi-final. Bari (Bossaso) team scored 3 goals in the first half, while the Lower Jubba (Kismayo) team scored one goal in the second half.
Fans expressed their joy to watch the final game, scheduled to be played on Friday between Banadir and Bari, representing Mogadishu and Bossaso, respectively.
