I agree annes character was a whimpy,docile little miss mousey. I wonder what JA meant by creating such a character. A similar character is Fanny price in Mansfield park, whimpy and mousey, until in the end of the book. I think JA was frustrated with women being dismissed and misused like cinderalla in those days, so when the character, stands up--it was a climax ending. But in the book--Annes standing up, is light and gentle. She basically, gave Wentworth a hint as to 'she is still interested'. Never saying it directly, but definitely, hinting in a gentle ladyes way. Which is priceless.

Now, if annes mother was alive--her mother would have done what Mrs Bennet in pride and prejudice did.

She would have sent her Anne to stay at his home over night, in a rainy day so that she cold and forced to stay over nite or a week.
