I know thatAsadSL wrote:Lets just say majority of the current Somali diaspora left Somalia in the 90's.
But there were few who did leave the country before then, namely the elite who could afford to go to UK, Italy, USA, UAE, Saudi...ect..

It was compensation and tactics for Beesha Sade, you see Maxamad Siyaad Barre AUN, used money on his people instead of their land, so that other tribes won't say oh siyad barre is only building his own land (Gedo + galgaduud), so he spended money on his people but not his land (he did though built roads, bridges, shools etc in his land), thats why he held power for so long, but he was also wadani and helped others.AsadSL wrote:Just proves everything that was wrong with that former government. giving students privileges to travel abroad due to clan.XimanJaale wrote:I know that during 21 yrs of kacaan period, that many many many Marehan youth were sent to Italy, UK, Russia, USA for education, diplomacy, health care, miliatry education etc. Hope that is useful.

Eh, it wasn't just Marehan. Neo-potism was relevant obviously, but painting one brush is a little bit revisionist to say the least.XimanJaale wrote:I know that during 21 yrs of kacaan period, that many many many Marehan youth were sent to Italy, UK, Russia, USA for education, diplomacy, health care, miliatry education etc. Hope that is useful.
My father was one of those youth sent to Italy to study and later to America in his teens.
It didn't matter what clan you were from if your family was pretty well off for the time. In fact of the Somalis that I know that came here during the 1970s/1980s... they are a diverse bunch in terms of Qabil... all of my dad's friends come from North to South (Issaq, Darod, Hawiye, Digil y Mirifle, Reer Xamar)

Re: James Dahl or anyone, please help
Like this wikipedia diagram shows, Somali immigration was virtually nonexistence before the mid 90's. The few elites who managed to immigrate abroad are too insignificant to diagram, and movements into neighboring countries most likely wasn't documented.
