Re: Political Islam: a brief intro to current discourse
I would like to address a few points raised in this topic. Political Islam refers to the use of Islam as a political ideology, by which Islamic principles and doctrines are used to explain how a society should function and the best methods of achieving such social order. Political Islam is part and parcel of the Shariah, but the Shariah is not limited to the construction of the society, it addressed many aspects of life that are a-political. Few of you have mentioned the problem of having numerous interpretations and complexities in relation to the political Islam, and that is not a negative aspect of political Islam, rather it showcases diversity and promotes debate, which is healthy. This is something that is in fact part of the Islamic tradition and history, and debunks the notion of a monolithic take on political Islam. Americans, and supreme court judges specifically, can have a debate on how to interpret the constitution, but they are binded by the same belief in the principles and doctrines within the constitution.

I will always be of the opinion that politics and religion should not mix at all. Let the government maintain the infrastructure and keep the peace, and allow the private citizen to worry about his/her eternal soul themselves.

Very undemocratic, It wouldn't be feasible in a Muslim majority country

Re: Political Islam: a brief intro to current discourse
The over complication of Islam has mislead many members into believing that there is more than one type of shariah. Shariah is concrete and unchanging and has been defined by both Qur'an and sunnah. Qualified scholars need to be present in order to properly implement shariah law, wholeheartedly. the thing is, if shariah law is not implemented wholeheartedly it ceases to be correct. For example, many countries have approached shariah law in an unfitting passion. They want to pick and choose according to their desires which part of the sharia they wish to implement. this should be rejected, for example; we have many so called muslims who are against the xuduud i.e, stoning, and cutting of hands. What they don't realize is that divine legislation works in unison with other aspects. We have even more extreme outliers of our religion who propose for the complete removal of shariah law, not knowing what this entails. Sharia works to protect the livlihood for the muslims and is not a tool that should be used at ones disposal. Many critics of shariah law have not properly learned their religion. They have been led to believe by their Western enviroment that shariah is primarily xuduud. this is absolutely false, the procedures of prayer, abultion and political jurispendence is part of shariah. Shariah also serves to protect the morality of human life, if it is barred from the political arena, corruption would be rampant, with its implementation no one is above the law. We have a great example, the Prophet who was also a political leader, lets draw examples from him and his companions.
