SSDF received free weapons and equipment while the SNM had to to pay for their own weapons the Ethiopians simply agreed to turn a blind eye.

The SNM by going alone had to rely on donations was on a shoe string budget and had to remain democratic and anwerable to the people
the SSDF was a dictatorship led by personalities such as abdullahi yusuf.and had unlimited resources.
The SNM had less than 1000 fighting men from 1981 to 1984 while the SSDF ballooned to over 3000 men at the same time..

but by 1984 they were defeated and went to siad barre with their tails between their legs and begged for forgiveness

The SNM increased slowly to 3000 men by 1988, over 10,000 by 1990 and with the captured weapons from the SNA and raiding the Ethiopian main depot at jijiga was 50,000 by 1991...

ofcourse allot of the Ethiopian loot from jijiga found their way to the USC and aideeds hands...
