What is a quarter? I thought they only used that in high school?

Ours is Spring, fall or summer semester!

The amount of money you get back depends on when you file you financial aid. If you do it on January 1, which is the day it opens you will get a lot back than say when you do it in March or April. But most dependent students don't get their parents tax return till febuary or March though.

These are the different calander academic systems America uses:

1. The semester= academic year is divided into two terms---this is the longest of them all.

2. The quarter= the academic year is divided into four terms N summer is counted as one of the terms---shortest.

3. The trimester system divides the academic year into three terms---dhexda ka ah!


And we usually use the Quarter system in my state...but we will soon change it to the Samester system in my school...don't know about other schools though

It means just what it implies, that you are now independent. Your income alone will be used to calculate your FAFSA, you don't have to fill out the parents section, nor do you wait for your parents' income taxes. You can file your FAFSA as soon as it becomes availble to file i.e. in early January. Also, in addition to graduate grants, might want to apply for fellowships and research grants. Grad schools tend to be a bit more expensive, generally. The extra aid you score from these alternative programs can make a huge difference, might even mean you may not need student loans.
