Re: How Somalis Are Viewed by non somalis
naming few apples of an entire population wont help your argument.
4 players kulahaa.
its like me saying (chinese are tall because they have the like of YAO in the NBA).
about not speaking somali, ill say its paritially true due to the fact that they speak
another language ontop of the SOMALI which sounds SWAHILI.
i have seen them speak the other dialect and it sounded nothing like somali.

just read the entire thread..
the first poster you quoted is from Snet...
he is a somali 100% and because of his virulent anti-somalilandism and Somaliweynist tendencies
i propose he is darood.

Re: How Somalis Are Viewed by non somalis
the writter did not either represent any scientificall prove that Somali bantus are shorter than Somali nomads therefore is bulshit to claime they are shorter than somali nomads.zingii wrote:naming few apples of an entire population wont help your argument.

for me JAREER WEYNE somalis are less then 10% of somalis. if they can produce 4 tall national basket players then i think they are everage taller or equal non jareer weyne soomaalis.
about the language 90% of jareer weyne speak normal Somaali like somali nomads.
jareer weyne(somali bantus) are not singel clan. jareer weyne waxay u qabsamaan:-
1=- reer shabeelle= they speak soomali( maxaa tiri accent) they live hiiraan. shabeelada dhexe and banaadir even some of them kililka shanaad ethiopia
2:-Shiidle= they speak most of them maxaa tiri and some of them maay maay accent. they live in banaadir. shabeelooyinkaand bay.
3.-Makane= they speak af soomali maxaa tiri most of them and af maay maay. they live shabellada hoose and banaadir and shabeelada dhexe and bay and bakool.
4= Duubo= they live hiiraan and kililka shanaad ethiopia they speak somali kililka shanaad accent.
5= Mushunguli= they speak sawaahili accent and af somaali. they are only bantus who come from other countres like tanzania and malawi.
marka mushunguliga waa less then 5% of jareer weyne and they are only jareer who have non af soomali mother tongue.
marka sheekada ah somali bantu does not speak af soomaali is untrue.

What I'm going to give here is my personal assessment as a white American from the glorious state of Delaware, so keep that in mind. It's a combination of what I've been told and what I've personally witnessed. Only some of them that believe this, and the Arab lineage belief seems to be more of a Darod thing than anything else.
I've never seen an ethnic group as proud or as xenophobic (may not be correct in the sense of fear but really do not care for outsiders) as the Somalis. The Somalis are culturally and even physically homogenous to some extent, which is quite a feat for being at such a geographic crossroads, with the Habesha (though they do share some features with them) to the west, the Arabs to the northeast, and the Bantu to the south.
If you know what you're looking for while you walk down the street you can identify fairly easily who is a Somali regardless of what their wearing. Men typically have narrow faces with long and narrow noses and a high forehead. Women tend to share the forehead trait, but have rounder faces and less sharp features. Their hair also tends to be less kinky than other Africans. I hate to really break this down into a generalization of physical features, but they recognize these traits and really use it to seperate themselves from a group that I wouldn't even call second class citizens in Somalia, the Bantu.
The Bantu are descendants of slaves who were brought through Zanzibar from Malawi, Tanzania, and Mozambique in the 19th century up to Somalia to work on plantations. Slavery was still practiced in Somalia up until the 1930s. The Bantu were darker, shorter, didn't speak Somali, and were traditonally farmers. While in coastal regions intermarriage with Arabs was uncommon but it did happen, the Somalis would absolutely never marry Bantu. Bantu are frequently referred to by Somalis by racial slurs, the most common being jareer, which is effectively an equivilant to "friend of the family" and to say that someone has timo jareer is to effectively say they have nappy hair. The other one is more straightforward, adon, which means slave. Sadly, most of the Somali I know is racial slurs. The Bantu are in a really lovely situation in Somalia, no one there gives a poo poo whether they live or die and they have probably suffered more than any group through Somalia's recent history.
Now are there Somalis that share striking resemblence to Arabs? Yes, some of the light skinned Somalis could be mistaken for Arabs. But there's Somalis that are easily as dark as Bantu. I have read on other forums thhe president of the Transitional Federal Government, Sharif Ahmed, be repeatedly insulted for how dark he is and how he looks Bantu. The Arabs don't generally sit around and worry about these things, but they are definitely not Arabs. They may be Muslim, many of them may speak Arabic, but Somalis are not Arabs to Arabs. Arabic is not their native tongue and their culture is very different.
In modern times there seems to be some aversion to being called black or African. Somalis will say they are just Somalis, they never called themselves black or African and it is what it is. I get this sense of being afraid of being affiliated with the Bantu, or even other Africans they traditionally had no contact with like Nigerians. There's something very special to them about being Somali, and to have that diminished or taken away is something they don't want to happen.
Again, this isn't how all Somalis feel and just the observations of a white American. I wish I could give you a more valid perspective of this situation but I can't. I will however link to a Somali forum where a lot of this behavior is rampant and functions as a sort of microcosm of clan and ethnic politics once I'm finished writing up the last section. I was working on it before I got caught up in this post.

I find it laughable how every half-decent post attributed to a Somali on this forum is supposedly written by Voltage.
