Atlanta is one city where that is not the case. There is a sizable black professional community there, attracting blacks from all over the United Stats.Monk-of-Mogadishu wrote:No, when Western blacks get money they marry white chicks and move to the whitest neighborhood money can buy; within 3 generations all the blackness is breeded out. It's easy to lateral into "General Counsel" positions after a few years as a law firm associate, then you work your way up to the higher executive positions.HalfBked wrote:Very little of this has much merit. It all appears to be ceremonial and very much a rarity. Corporate America is still riddled with the usual back-handed policies that curtail any tangible progress for non-whites. The glass ceiling is more than an urban legend, its a reality. Surprised most of them are law school graduates, MBA would have made more sense.
As for your other comment, it's definitely true that not only hard work will get you to the top but successfully manipulating internal politics. The reason I posted this was because I nonetheless found these people very commendable, especially the black woman. Rising from a poor background, she became CEO of a major company. Considering all the adversities women face, add to that being black too, that is very impressive.

Hard work plays a role in their success, that's undeniable. My issue was with the whole parading a few black heads of companies as though that's a norm. It also reminded me of the whole "noble savage" phenomenon, as though we should feel compelled to throw our hands up in the air and yellow "Hoooraaay!" simply because we spotted a few non-white CEOs and CFOs. It just wreaks of mediocracy and simplicity. I applaud their efforts, just don't buy in to the mirage that is the "American Dream." For every black person that makes, 10 others fail or never get the chance. Even in the year 2011 and with a black president in office, wage disparities between blacks and whites is astronomical, not to mention poverty levels.

Only 50 years ago Blacks couldn't eat at the same lunch counter as whites. Today there is a black family in the White House, and major American corporations are lead by blacks. No one is denying that economic equality still eludes the majority of black America, but by damn there's progress. So you either tell kids "hey, you can make it too" or forever blacks will be held back from trying or will have an excuse in "the white man held me back".HalfBked wrote:Union
