^^ some Arabs can't even recite with tajweed. it just depends where you learn Quran and what sheikh. SOmalis back increasingly learn tajweed rules. Hence why they are churning out some of the best recitors around.

its not about being arab or not bro..rules of tajweed are learned in skools..it all depend on whether u studies Ahkam of tajweed or not..the best thing in soomaaliya even in skool the Ahkam tajweed is part of the tarbiyah Al-islaam

tarbiyah al-islam had five subjects : Al-tawhiid, fiqhi, tafseer (quran wa culumuh) , hadeeth and Ahkam al-Tajweed..and we used to take it from primarry to middle skool

EDIT: Just finished watching the whole documentary. It was pretty decent.

The Senegalese boy was impressive. I'm shocked his family sent him alone to Egypt, they probably could not afford the ticket. The judges were unkind for interrupting him and yelling at him in Arabic, but allowing him to recite at the mosque afterwards was a good losing gift. The cynical side of me thinks they did it just because the cameras were there....

The Sardov boy had the best recitation voice in my opinion. It was good the Tajik government shut down the one room school where he was taught solely how to recite the koran, because he was illiterate in everything else. He now attends a boarding school where he can continue his religious studies, which he obviously has an aptitude for, and secular studies (such as reading and writing and math) that will allow him to function in soceity. Also I don't speak Arabic, but doesn't his first name translate into "Prophet of God"? Is that allowed. :?

The overbearing wahabist father of the Maldives girl greatly annoyed me from the start all the way to the end. He was being a total ass during the entire competition, telling her she would lose several times, and even at the end when she won second place he still didn't seemed satisfied. Like the typical wahabist he has a chip on his shoulders for being non religious for thirty years and feels that being a short trousers, long bearded fundamentalist will make up for those years. Towards the end when the girls mother said she was the best in her math and science class and wanted to pursue a career in that field, the wahabist father vowed to take her to backward Yemen and turn her into a housewife. SMH.
His full name was Saidov Nabiollah Mohamed, so I believe the Nabiollah is referring to Mohamed and not himself.

Amazing doc  Felt terrible for Djamil when he started crying, miskiinka. Overall, the kids did very well. Wasn't surprised that Abdallah won though, his recitation was on point mashaAllah.

Thanks for sharin' Advo :D

MashaaAllah lovely documentary.. I cried throughout the whole thing.. Bless Djamil I wish he had an adult with him.. But MashaaAllah he was a strong little boy..

If the Tajikistani boy knew all the tajweed rules he would have won.. No competition!

Thanks for sharing the vid @ Advo.. :)

The documentaries and Bill Maher's show is the only reason why I still have HBO. Their shows suck and they don't update their movies fast enough.

As for the documentary, I watched it couple days and I don't know why Sadeboi is saying the Maldives father is misunderstood. I hate to agree with Union, but it seems he does have a chip on his shoulder for having been non-practicing for 30 years. His daughter was my favorite in the documentary and her intelligence continued to amaze me. I think that girl should be allowed to pursue what she wants and not be forced to be a "housewive". Who knows though, she has a more progressive mother and even the father did not seem extreme by character. In time I think he will change.

Saidov was the best reciter and I think it was good his education was also expanded although I did not like the political reasons that forced the closure of his madrasa. The state should butt the hell out of the neighborhood madrasas for the kids and if it wants to supplement their religious education, then they should invest in public schools. If the kid had not be accepted into the private school, he would not have had a religious nor secular education. I also do not like the idea of a Soviet-remnant almost althiest ruling politburo controlling the private religious affairs of people.

The Senagalese boy should not have been sent there without adequate support and translator. I felt bad for him but clearly he has potential with his recitation. Out of the three kids, he comes from the most stable and well-rounded background.

man, beautiful documentary.I was disappointed at the results though.the Tajik kid should have won I dont get how did the Egyptian kid win? it seems to me like the grading criteria is flawed, they cant judge the non Arab 11 year olds and the 17 years old egyptian teenager alike in terms of tajweed,of course the Egyptian kid will win cuz Arabic is his Mother tongue.they should definitely develop two separate criteria of grading for the arabic speaker and the non Arabic-speaker kids then assign more points for the voice and melody.I'm sure the young Nabiollah or even Dijamil would have had a shot at winning the first place then.

I actually disagree with you bro,a learned Arabic speaker would be far more suprior to non Arabic speakers when it comes to certain tajweed rules such as makhaarij al-xuruuf.we all know the atrocious somali wadaads' spelling of letters like خ andغ in congregational prayers despite their superior memorization skills and melodious recitations.

It is true I agree with Ciyaal. After we left dugsi, we had private lessons at home by Garre teacher and he told us from the beginning our tajweed was horrible. We don't speak Arabic but he taught us the correct tajweed to the point when the only one of us with good recitation voice (the rest of us suck  ) recites in public, his tajweed is always mentioned as near-perfect. I myself have been told my pronunciation of Arabic is sometimes more flawless than a native speaker by Arabic class teacher and I give all credit to the repitation and forced learning of tajweed by the former macalin. I agree with Ciyaal you can learn tajweed without speaking Arabic if your teacher knows the rules and I find Arabic is a unique language where you can learn to speak perfectly without even know the language.
