The Khawarij

Thus, the heretical khawarij, who the Prophet (sa) ordered to be killed, were eventually put to death by the Leader of the Believers, Ali in Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him), and the scholars from the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) and their students (tabi’in) agreed (with Sayidna Ali) on this issue. However, Ali ibn Abi Talib, S’ad ibn Abi Waqas and others form the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) did not declare the khawarij as apostates, and even though they exercised capital punishment on them, they still considered them as Muslims. For that reason Ali (and the others) did move towards killing the khawarij until they had committed mass murder and ravaged the wealth of the Muslim community” (6) Thus, they were killed, not because they were considered apostates, but because of their rebellion against the state and the carnage that took place because of them. (7)
As you can see, senior sahabah did not consider khawaarij as murtads. It is not clear cut issue.

I based my view regarding khawarij from the sunnah, not from al hawaa:
Narrated Yusair bin 'Amr:

I asked Sahl bin Hunaif, "Did you hear the Prophet saying anything about Al-Khawarij?" He said, "I heard him saying while pointing his hand towards Iraq. "There will appear in it (i.e. Iraq) some people who will recite the Quran but it will not go beyond their throats, and they will go out from (leave) Islam as an arrow darts through the game's body.'
[Sahih Bukhari: Volume 9, Book 84, Number 68]
A person among the people then sought permission (from the Holy Prophet) for his murder. According to some, it was Khalid b. Walid who sought the permission. Upon this the Messenger of Allah (SallAllah-u-Alaihi-wa-Sallam), said: From this very person's posterity there would arise people who would recite the Qur'an, but it would not go beyond their throat; they would kill the followers of Islam and would spare the idol-worshippers. They would glance through the teachings of Islam so hurriedly just as the arrow passes through the pray. If I were to ever find them I would kill them like 'Ad.
[Sahih Muslim: Book 005, Number 2318]

'Amiral mumineen Ali RA said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (SallAllah-u-Alaihi-wa aali-Sallam) as saying: There would arise at the end of the age a people who would be young in age and immature in thought, but they would talk (in such a manner) as if their words are the best among the creatures. They would recite the Qur'an, but it would not go beyond their throats, and they would pass through the Deen as an arrow goes through the prey. So when you meet them, kill them, for in their killing you would get a reward with Allah on the Day of Judgment.
[Sahih Muslim: Book 005, Number 2328]

In those presented hadith we can conclude two things:
1) they leave islam like an arrow passes through the pray
2) Killing is permitted, for the prophet Muhammad pbuh said:

Ibn Masood (radi Allahu anhu) said, the Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “The blood of a Muslim may not be spilled except for one of three (cases): The one who was married and commits fornication, a life for a life, and the one who leaves his religion, separating from the Jamaa’ah”

If they were muslims and this was just a case of Life for a life then noble prophet pbuh would not mention "leaves islam" when talking about the khawarij.
Nor would he compare them to Thamud and Add who were kuffars.

And Allah swt knows best

The only thing i agree with zaydis is love for ahlulbayt. But other than that we have different thoughts.
For example i do not necessary believe that the 12 rightly guided imams should be from AALA Muhammad pbuh. They could be from any subclan of quraish so that means Abu Bakr siddiq r.a, Umar r.a, Uthman r.a were also IMAMS.
