Re: Why do people think being in particular clan influences.
Dear Haxxor,
Is it news to you that somalis worship tribalism? Allah, Islam and nationhood is to a somali a matter of discourse! It is the tribe or the clan that fills our hearts. The talk of islam or the frequent utterance of "Alla said thi,,," "we are muslims" is just pure nonsense. It has come to a point that this cancer has permeated to every level of society; the sheikh, the intellectual, the fadhi ku dir and the xaawaleys are all agents of tribes.
We are talking about clans and tribes and hitherto generalisations are inevitable. The whole notion of tribalism and clanism is one that is based on collective actions.
My guess is that you have misunderstood my earlier reply; The Hawiyes (the largest tribe in somalia) have taken tribalism to a new level. Tribalism in the hawiye context has mutated. Instead of the hawiye umbrella what you have are clans, subclans etc. This is also true to some exent for the daroods and the rahanweins but it manifests itself more in the hawiye context.
I concur that the single reason why tribalism exists is due to resource allocation; resources are scarce and you have many mouths to feed; you have many somalis that want to lead a life they cannot afford; there is also a culture of passivity that has engulfed our people. Add urbanisation and you have dangerous combinations.

Meru we are not less qabiilist than others the opposite might be true, but this is also our secret.
We do not hide our qabiilism, we use qabiil to fight, to solve problems and to make peace..
While other somali clans hide behind nationalism, and Islam while pursuing a narrow clan agenda..
This is why peace between isaaq and peace with other clans is easier and our region is more stable..
The main issue is clan and it is addressed directly allowing problems to be solved..
Ironically because of this success, qabiilism will be close to extinction in the future generations.

gurey,it was just an observation, not that i have anything against any clan to me you are all somalis, that said i am impressed that somaliland is a haven of peace and relative prosperity am sure if it would get recognition it would thrive,i have never heard it complain of internal issues. what i would want for you is to model along great britain where like scotland you are independent entities in most of things.

Meru Somalilanders are very cultured much more cultured than other other Somalis there is more traditional leadership this created a healthy environmental stable base for a new country to develop as one of Africa 's most successful countries. But i dont think Somaliland is interested in that kind of model you have to be with Puntland they are interested in that. Somaliland will not take less than a full independent country
Re: Why do people think being in particular clan influences.
I do not hate fellow somalis for belonging to another tribe, but I will love my tribe till death do us apart. Somalis are screaming on top of their lounges for less qabyaalad and more unity, but this is just a fasade, in todays somali you can not trust anyone, everyone is your enemie and your insurance is your tribe, I dont believe in supporting a clan member in right and wrong, but nevertheless some somalis might, and this will keep the clan based society in Somali going.
All in all clan is your identity in Somalia, and it will stay like that for another good years, clan feuds are not died, they are just put on hold at the momement.

Ex-Bantu Meru lol!
Where did u get that from!
Among all somalis I came to know in my childhood , the most clan oriented are Isaaqs; when they attain a certain age their friends and interest are exclusively Clan oriented. They can travel two or three kilometres to go and play and be with their keen than playing with non issaaq in their neighbourhood.
That used to drive crazy other somalis
On the other hand, everybody knew how they are, and interacted with them accordingly.
I still have contacts with some Issaa/Gada childhood friends, but it never occured to me to look for the few issaaqs I knew.
Clanism when honestly displayed is ok even respectable as ideology, its bad/evil when hidden under other ideology!

You can love your people, and not hate others, and by loving my tribe or clan I mean, helping them in different ways, like improving their degaans and they lifes.globetrotter2 wrote:Xamud,Xamud. wrote:I do not hate fellow somalis for belonging to another tribe, but I will love my tribe till death do us apart.
