Joseph Alois Schumpeter ( a german - Austrian economist who lived in the USA) once wrote about the propensity of capitalism in renewing itself; in his seminal work, he asserted among others that equilibra prices cannot be maintained (an issue he shared with Marx). In this way, capitalist societies risk being overrun by other modes such as communism. He called Marx a prophet and formulated what is perhaps his best contribution to economics; the notion of creative destruction.
Creative destruction concerns as the name implies the capacity to create a system which then is exposed to exogenous pressures and consequently collapses. In the Schumpeterian way, creative destructions come because of a new industry, new organisation, new infrastructure, new production methodologies and new logistics etc.
Schumpeterian dynamics could be applied to Somalinet. This website was a pioneer in creating a pansomali website where people could chat; who will forget the infant days when we people rushed to the different chat forums to communicate with relatives, loved ones and occassionaly engaged in romantic endeavours? The chat rooms were appreciated; it was visited by the elderly and young.
There was no Hiiranonline, no gedoonline, no all puntland or somaliland net then,
Somaliaonline tried to compete with somalinet. It failed because it was not Somalia-online but qabiil-online. So, was somalilife
The forums were great; apart from the constant insult from Ninxoon (who was very funny) and tribal rants from a few, deceny and intelligence was what identified somalinet from all other websites.
When the tribal websites started appearing and somali internet visitors became exposed to tribal discourses, somalinet was the beacon of free speech; it was the liberal venue which gave everyone a say.
Unfortunately, somalis and freedom appear to be oxymoronics.
We have somalis publically supporting the sick ideology of wahabism and its somali offspring shebaab. Our folks are exposed to their propaganda. We have people who spew tribal hatred without thinking about the consequences etc
I fear that this last beacon of free speech will be lost unless there are enlighted moderators.
I think it is the right time for the adminstrator to take steps and ensure that unsuspecting somalis are not exposed to the hate messages of wahabists on this site.
