Re: Tunisian Islamists neutered
How were they neutered? They won the election, appointed their own PM and consulted on the appointment of independent interim President. This is just healthy political contestation as was the case in Turkey. I bet you were one of the types predicting Tunisia was headed to Iran like doom if Ennahda won the election.
Re: Tunisian Islamists neutered
They may have won the election, but the secularists have made them so servile to their agenda that this victory tastes as bitter as defeat to the Islamists.Jaidi wrote:How were they neutered? Re: Tunisian Islamists neutered
elnahda takes their cues from Turkeys AK party, it is their example..
Whats going on is simply good politics, in the end secularism is the biggest loser in Tunisia, because of the forcefull nature the ben ali regime hoisted it on the people.
The important factor here is the new constitution,
it says that islam will be the main source of laws.
The same as the new proposal for the future egyptian constitution, and the Libyan one.
so much for secularism..

Re: Tunisian Islamists neutered
They don't "control the political platform". They won less than 40% of the popular vote, and their entire government is dependent on the continued support of the secularist parties. Even making a mere statement about the caliphate can cause such poltical turmoil, imagine Ennahda trying to endorse Shariah law....it will never happen. They are now Islamist in name only.Jaidi wrote:union wrote:They may have won the election, but the secularists have made them so servile to their agenda that this victory tastes as bitter as defeat to the Islamists.Jaidi wrote:How were they neutered? They control the political platform, and there political maturity is for the greater good of Tunisia. It's like you are already setting up the narrative to discredit them for any achievements that could be achieved in governance. When Islamist party is on verge of election success, scaremonger and make allusions to Iran/Saudi Arabia, when they show political maturity and do no such thing = argue its because they are in servitude to opposition parties? You can't have it both ways.

Not it doesn't. Obviously you didn't read the article.
Ennahda is now hammering out that government with the secularist Congress for the Republic (CPR) and Democratic Forum for Labour and Liberties, known by its Arabic name, Ettakatol.
The secularists have Ennahda on a leash.Ennahda has pledged to uphold progressive laws on women's rights and not to push for new constitutional articles on religion.

Sure you can spin it whichever you want. Instead of crediting them for paving the way for a mature and informed civic discourse, you want to argue that they're subservient to the opposition. That is hilarious. This isn't some new tact from Ennahda, or some unforseen reversal, they've articulated the same vision for the past decade and a half even in exile. The scaremongers argued it was just doublespeak, and a ploy to gain political power that they would reverse as soon as they won an election. Now they've won and they've kept their word. Your response is to try twist it into a loss
Congrats to Ghannouchi and the new PM Mr. Jebbali.

The Tunisian people have spoken

Re: Tunisian Islamists neutered
“We are against trying to impose a particular way of life,” Ennahda leader Rached Ghannouchi, 70, a lifelong Islamist activist jailed and exiled under previous regimes, told Reuters
There will be no other references to religion in the constitution. We want to provide freedom for the whole country,” said the Islamist leader, who will not take any official role in the new government.
“There shouldn’t be any law to try to make people more religious,” said Ghannouchi, whose party has pledged to continue to allow alcohol and Western dress here and pursue economic policies favoring tourism, foreign investment and employment.
http://www.hurriyetdailynews.com/n.php? ... 2011-11-06The Islamist leader said he interprets sharia, the ill-defined and often confusing complex of Islamic teachings and laws, as a set of moral values for individuals and societies rather than a strict code to be applied to a country’s legal system. “Egypt says sharia is the main source of its law, but that didn’t prevent (deposed President Hosni) Mubarak from being a dictator,” he said, noting the explicit reference to sharia in Cairo’s constitution.
These so called Islamists have grown weak from years of exile in London. They will be kept weak and servile on a leash by the secularists, reduced to shame like the AKP of Turkey who can't even remove the hijab ban let alone create an Iran style theocracy.

Turkey's constitutional court already ruled that the hijab ban is permanent and cannot be appealed.Saraxnow wrote:Hijab ban on university students was uplifted due to AKP party's efforts http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-11880622reduced to shame like the AKP of Turkey who can't even remove the hijab ban let alone create an Iran style theocracy.

Re: Tunisian Islamists neutered
They did in 2008, however, in 2010 the women were permitted informally by most universities because of support from the AKP.

But this year, with the momentum behind him after winning the constitutional referendum in September and more compliant bureaucrats in the Board of Education, the government in effect ended the ban by stealth.
The Constitutional Court is in any case being restructured following the referendum, and is less likely to challenge the governing party so boldly in future.

Just let me know when Erogan is able to bring his wife into any government ministry without being stopped.
