I always get chuckles whenever "northern" Somalis attack the linguistic prowess of "southern" Somalis by evincing Gibilcads (rer xamar) or Jareer Somalis as proof positive. They then attack all "southern" SOmalis --dir, darood, hawiye, Raxanweyn -- using these ethnic minorities. Since when did ethnic minorities become representative of all the ethnic SOmalis living in "southern" Somalia. I keep putting Southern Somalia in brackets because this geographic construct is meaningless and arbitrary - where does "southern" Somalia start depends on who you ask.

Anyways, before civil war Xamar/Mogadishu was cosmopolitan inhabited by virtually all Somalis. Because most of those Somalis moved into the city post-1960, a new Xamar dialect developed that was discernable from the old Xamari accent spoken by the original Xamar inhabitants (Gibilcads and some abgaal subclans). This is the abaayo/aboowe, nooh, etc accent. Everyone who was born and who grew up there spoke it regardless of clan/regional affliation.

The substantive difference in the Somali language is not between this phony contruct of North vs South but between Af Maxaa and Af Maay Maay. Af Maxaa is the native tongue/dialect of more than 85% of Somalis and even af Maay Maay speakers speak Af Maxaa so you could say af Maxaa is lingua franca of Somalia. Thus, most Somalis can understand each other assuming they speak fluent Af Maxaa Somali. No fluent Af Maxaa speaking Somali can not claim to have "difficulty" understanding another af Maxaa speaking somalia irrespective of local dialect. I can understand af Maxaa speaking Somalis from Kilinka Shanaad, NFD, all of former Somali Republic and Djabouti. But I admit I difficulty understanding some mareexaans.

After we were done playing, I and the qowdhan remained in the court just taking a breath or two. The reer xamar guy went to the lockers to change. Then realizing his wallet was in the reer xamar guy's locker, the qoowdhan guy called him and asked 'waryaa xageed joogtaa?' and the reer xamar guy responds with 'sanduuqa nooh' He was on speaker so I started laughing because I knew he meant the lockers. Meanwhile, the qowdhan guy after I explained to him what the guy meant said 'bal maqla hooyadii wasahaan'  My point is why do people from north have difficulties understanding people from the south while those from the south perfectly understand those from the north? :?
The Xamar guy wasn't clear. He should have said:

''Qolka sanduuqyada baan jooga.''
