Ethiopia seemed offended by the United States recent decision to turn to Kenya. Zenawi’s displeasure is motivated by two main concerns:

a) Ethiopia is worried that Kenya might replace it as a key player in East Africa’s military and security affairs. Zenawi doesn’t want to lose the power and prestige the strategic alliance affords him in terms of consolidating power.

b) If Kenya succeeds in crushing al-Shabab, along with its backers, Kenya will have more leverage to influence the resultant political outcome. That, of course, reduces Ethiopia’s influence and will have a more immediate consequence for Ethiopia’s domestic politics.

The financial and political incentives, provided by the U.S., have always been a secondary motive for Zenawi’s meddling in Somalia. Ethiopia has been battling Oromo and Ogaden insurgencies, both groups with kinship, historical and political ties to the people of Somalia. Thus, Meles’ determination to prevent the reemergence of a stable and sovereign government in Somalia is a tacit maneuver to deny these rebels a possible ally.

If Kenya, seen as sympathetic to Ethiopian rebels, dominates the Somali conflict, the resulting political arrangement might not favor Zenawi. To allow that would be a disastrous blow; thus, he secured an endorsement from the African Union by exploiting the Union’s suspicion of western imperialistic ambitions in light of recent events in Libya.

At the moment, both Ethiopia and Kenya are working from two angles in the battle for Somalia’s control. Ethiopia’s decision to throw itself onto this conflict is based on a simple strategic calculation that its military strength will tip the outcome in their favor.

IRONm@N,

Ethiopia was dragged into this conflict after it initially resisted joining the third face of Somalia invasion. The first being the Ethiopian invasion in 2006, and second being the AMISOM entry in to the conflict. Those who are behind this don't believe Kenyans cannot do the work, so Ethioipa was brought in.

its not about how important or unimportant Somalia is idiots, its about power egos of these different goverments and geopolitical of games.
WW2 started in a small country in Eastern Europe, that had no power or was involve in the war.

This commentary was written by someone who has no understanding of what is actually going on.

1.
Zenawi doesn’t want to lose the power and prestige the strategic alliance affords him in terms of consolidating power.
Big words; no meaning. Which power does Zenawi have in East Africa? It's not even part of East Africa.

2. If Kenya, seen as sympathetic to Ethiopian rebels, dominates the Somali conflict, the resulting political arrangement might not favor Zenawi. The most uninformed statement South of Sahara. Anyone who thinks that Kenya has been sympathetic to any of rebel groups in Ethiapia is dreaming. The only rebel group that Kenya has been sympathetic to amog the countries that border her is South Sudan's SPLA. Even so, she managed to play her game so well that she was able to mediate the two sides.

FYI, Ethiopia has always been going to Somalia whenever it has wished to. In a meeting in adis, three days after Kenya went crossed the borders, Addis had already indicated it's willing to go their.

Sudan expels Kenyan ambassador

After issuing the arrest warrant (Sudanese President) on Monday, the Kenyan High Court judge said Mr Bashir’s arrest should be arranged by the Attorney General and the Minister for Internal Security "should he ever set foot in Kenya".President Bashir flew to Nairobi last year to attend a ceremony marking the adoption of Kenya’s new Constitution.

Sudan has now ordered Kenya’s ambassador to leave the country after a Kenyan judge issued an arrest warrant for President Omar al-Bashir, wanted by the International Criminal Court for alleged war crimes in Darfur, the foreign ministry said.

“The Sudanese government has ordered the Kenyan ambassador to leave the country within 72 hours,” foreign ministry spokesman Al-Obeid Meruh told AFP.

“They have also ordered the Sudanese ambassador to leave Kenya and return to Khartoum,” he added.

President Bashir is wanted in The Hague-based ICC for alleged war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide committed in Sudan’s Darfur region, where the UN says at least 300,000 people have been killed in the eight-year conflict.

Now even Sudan is involved.
The whole East African region is forming into two alliances.

Kenya, Uganda, South Sudan, Ethiopia, America, French vs Sudan, Eritrea, Djibouti, Somalia, Egypt, Turkey, Iran.
