Depends where u r Twist.In most of Africa and Europe,chips means what Americans call fries.

What Americans call chips,the rest of the world calls them crisps.

Beans, I was at my favorite fish & chips 2 weeks ago waiting for my order and this young lady who took her order & left the place returned after few moments and told the lady at the counter that she ordered fries, not chips. Markaasay igu soo dhacday in midka skinny-ga ah ee McDonald's etc ay ku iibiyaan ee addictive-ka ah uu yahay fries whereas this fat, ugly, disgusting, tasteless one they server with fish is the chips. I felt like cheated all this time I was buying that crap.

Chips are those packaged dried,thinly sliced crips.Usually made at a factory.

Fries are fresh(most cases) potatoes deep fried.Their sizes vary from one place to the other.

It depends entirely on the toppings/flavour and how hungry I am. If I'm looking to be filled, it's fries. But when I want chips, I want chips simply for them.

Beans, may be I am but down here mainly people refer to the ones sold with fish as chips; never heard anyone calling them fries thought they look the same but these are fatter. Check the pic below:



Whereas the fries mainly come with burgers and are always thinner and tastier. But I think you're right, may be the wording varies down here but they are the same.
