From Yahoo! Movies audience reviews:
-"ok, but not great.
I walked out of the movie feeling kind of disappointed. The action was great but some of the dialogue was so stupid. The movie could not go five minutes without Robert Downey coming off with some stupid one-liner. This was a movie that was good but could have been great if they had just left out the goofiness. The hulk fights were pretty cool but I feel like there was way to much attention paid to hawkeye and blackwidow most of the time they were on the screen I was thinking "who cares". Everyone is excited about this movie because it's one of the first big superhero teamup movies but I think in a few years this will not be remembered as really being that good."
-"Zzzzzzzzzzzzz . . .
This movie is 2.5 hours of explosions and body slams. The plot: An army of aliens is coming to destroy earth. Intriguing.
Here's a bootleg copy of the movie: Kaboom! Pow! Blam! Body Slam! Punching! Kicking! Arrow to the eyesocket! Body Slam! Predictable one-liner! Punch with hammer! More Punching! Manly stare down! Young butt in tight pants! Body thrown across screen! Alien thrown across screen! Punch, punch, punch! And on and on and on . . . . . . . . . Where's the Tylenol?"
-"Disappointed
This is by far the WORST superhero movie I have seen. It was way too long and the middle of the movie dragged on and on. A big part of the plot was how the bad guy needed the Hulk to pull off his plan. Needed him for what? Never explained. Easily could have made this a 90 minute movie. There were some funny lines but the climatic ending fight scene could have been at least cut down by 10 minutes."
-"way overhyped, too long, and boring
I`m stunned at how much hype and box office success
this film has received. In truth, its an average movie with
unrealistic storylines and grossly exaggerated and misused
CGI throughout the entirety of the movie.
Again, very average movie, not worthy of all the
kudos the public is showering it with. I would wait
if you`re reading this review, for it to come on cable since it
amounts to nothing more than a huge video-game like
adventure ride you`d see t an amusement park."
-"Could have been better
I may have made a mistake by seeing it at the drivein. Just seemed to me there was a lot of hype and it did not live up to it. Just a lot of fight scenes without much character development. Not much spark between any of the characters. Liked Thor and Ironman the best but the best were just so so.
It is just an OK Movie but nothing to write home about. I liked Dark Shadows better and even though I was middle ground on Hunger Games I like it better than Avengers."
-"Overrated, only mildly entertaining
Let me start by saying that I am a huge fan of all of the movies that led up to The Avengers team film. Iron Man, Iron Man 2, Thor, Captain America, The Incredible Hulk. Thoroughly enjoyed them all. Going in to The Avengers, I was expecting a movie of the same quality and caliber as the lead-up films.
Two and a half hours later, I walked out unimpressed and somewhat disappointed. Michael Bay could take The Avenger characters out, insert Transformers, and have another Transformers film. The CGI was mediocre. There were some effects that almost appeared cartoonish. The sound effects were unoriginal, almost stock/generic in nature. When I saw in the credits that Skywalker did some of the effects, it made perfect sense. Some of the sound effects sounded like they were straight out of the Star Wars prequels.
Some elements of the film reminded me of a Power Rangers movie on steroids. Honestly, Loki's costume and the costume of the Other were way too Power Rangers-ish. Overdone and low quality.
For the most part, the humor in the film fell very flat. Very little reaction from the 50+ people in the theater. The second bonus scene at the very end of the credits garnered more of a reaction than anything during the actual movie.
The acting was disappointing. Samuel Jackson seemed flat and one-dimensional. Robert Downey Jr.'s attitude in the film was amplified well above what was seen in the Iron Man solo films. Chris Hemsworth is very lucky that the Thor solo film came before this team film. The Thor in The Avengers was lifeless compared to what we have previously seen. Had this appearance been our first introduction to the character, going to see a solo film woud have been hard to fathom. Scarlett Johansson tried hard and put together an overall good performance as Black Widow. Mark Ruffalo absolutely stole the movie as Dr. Banner. The Hulk scenes were also the most entertaining. Clark Gregg was excellent as Phil Coulson. Oh yeah, Jeremy Renner was in it as Hawkeye...that's all I have to say about that (didn't care for the performance or the character...didn't need to be in the film at all.) Tom Hiddleston had some flashes of greatness as Loki, but the script let him down.
The treatment of Captain America was way too corny. I get that the guy just woke up out of a 70 year sleep, and is a die-hard all-American patriot. But the dialogue was just way too cheesy. Cap's action scenes were great, but the script/writing brought the character down a bit. Chris Evans did what he could, but what he was given to work with was lacking. More Ultimate Boy Scout than Super Solider.
I have seen Iron Man and Iron Man 2 several times. Thor and Captain America I have also watched at least three times each. As I was walking out of the theater, I wondered aloud to the people I was with if I would be able to sit through The Avengers again. My conclusion was "No, I couldn't sit through that again." The people I was with all agreed that trying to watch it again would be difficult. Too long, too drawn out, and borderline boring. I will buy the DVD as an addition to my Marvel movie collection when it is released, but it will not be something that I will watch again.
This film certainly isn't "epic", nor is it at the same level as Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. It is simply way overrated. Tons of action and noise, very little actual substance."
-"yaaaaaaawn...
I guess if you're 10 years old you might like it.. all it was is special effects..shooting crashing and blah blah..there is no story..find the cube?..thats it..in the mean time you watch 2 hours of superheros fighting and crashing around..thats it..of course thats what I expected I guess..and I paid $17.50 to see it in IMAX 3D..outrageous..just put any superhero movie out and the fools will come..whats next another Batman?..at least the Batman series has a story line.."
