islamist in this context is used as something negative. Like a terrorist, which is why any Muslim that oppose western style rule of government is considered an Islamist.

For some, using the term exclude them from the terrorist list and put them on the liberal/ more moderate side. But most who would use the term are more likely those still in the closet and walaahi you want believe how many Muslim fit in that category of cowards in the closets.
