This holding of hands thing is almost universal except for in the West/Cadaan countries. I remember watching this documentary, where a Welsh boy get sent to Kerala, India to learn how to fish and cook. He looked quite uneasy with the fisherman being very close to him, holding his hand, hugging him etc. Quite hilarious.

I can understand why you were shocked the use of habiibi from man to man, but believe me I felt the samething (shock) when I heard a Somali men saying aboowe to each other.
