She got away with murder. They couldn't give her a more serious charge because they had already convicted her with a lesser charge.

No, they gave her 12 years because she:

1. lied to the police and took the plea deal they offered her. Those idiot rent a cops didn't know about the videos during this time.

2. She told the police that Bernardo was a woman beater and would make her kneel down in the middle of their bedroom and beat/kick her. She also displayed battered woman syndrome
