I'll be happy to see a cure for this type of sickness. F-cking barbarians...they thought that they could make a successfull state by stoning and cutting of hands.Idiots!

Shabab's termination seems like a fantastic thing on the surface however we are quick to blind ourselves from reality. Shabab is a unifying element, they are an escape goat, most crimes can be attriputed to them and politician's failures are excused as a result of shabab.

This coupled with international control over the Aid funds renders the sought after political post in Somalia non profitable.

It is not going to be a career path of choice for the average disingenuous Somali.

Yes, Alshabaab is an unifying element. I did not like many things that alshabab did including cutting peopl's hands.....People makes mistakes; nations make mistakes. All they need is to learn from their mistakes. ....and I believe with time they would have grown out of many things.

But it is the fact that our neighbours are very much aware of that and they created this road map for us--clan-bsaed federalism

Let's not kid ourselves and pretend all of Somalia's problems will simply evaporate into thin air with the defeat of alshabaab.

We all know the true problem is an unchecked, corrupt by birth, secular politician.

Since 1991 each predatory group has handed over to the next while many profit from the micery of the masses.

- The opportunity for financial profit must be removed.
- Unneccessary spoilers should be punished rather then appeased.
- Developmental must be civilian centred rather than wasting million on fixing relation between politicians.

Politics must be made unattractive to ineffective old men suffering mid-life crises.

In the last 21 years had we invested in Engineers, Doctors, Teachers, Farmers etc all those millions that was kindly donated by the international community we would not be in this mess. It is the international community that imposses the need to fix our political leaders first and foremost and picks and chooses who they deem fit to negotiate with.

This cycle of grown men throwing tantrams will continue endlessly, until we refuse to appease them.

I do not write off al-shabaab.
they will not exist in their current form but they will continue to exist in other more clandestine forms.
You should all remember that allot of people are al-shabaab sympathizers especially in Somaliland and Puntland.
I am pretty sure that the main part of their survival strategy is to setup more sleeper cells and safe havens in the north, were they will join society and pretend to be a normal islamist movement.
They will try to form political parties and community aid organizations and regroup , recover and await for new opportunities.

at least this is the advice given to them by their fellow islamists around the world, they have not listen to them before
but facing total defeat they will have no choice.

My only concern is that authorities in somaliland do not take this seriously and do not have the capability to take advantage of this situation.
everyone knows where they are headed, this is the best chance to snuff them out, but qabiil will get in the way.

They don't seem that bright honestly. They think they can change things by remaining on the violent struggle. Their policies haven't screamed pragmatic when it comes with engaging long term vision with governance.

total defeat will make them change tactics there are signs they are already doing it or factions that have split off from them.
Their survival and revival depends on the success or lack of success of somalia.

if there is more foriegn domination of somalias politics and greater perception of an attack on islam,
alshabab version 2.0 will make a resurgence.

a movement depends on the population to live.

You make it sound like some 75% (allot) of people in Somalia, Somaliland and Puntland sympathize with al-shabaab. Given the effectiveness of the media in the West, Somalia and the two breakaway regions in demonizing al-shabaab, given the ineffectiveness of al-shabaab's media or propaganda-- how is it possible that some 75% of all Somalis sympathize with al-shabaab?

As usual, you come off as an expert. If you were al-Shabaab's supreme leader, how would you make their policies pragmatic and improve their governance? Give a few specific examples. And how would you deal with the paranoia of the West regarding political Islam?

i dont know where you got this figure of 75%.

i believe those that support al-shabaab are a tiny minority thats knows how to keep its head down and avoid attention.

Now those who are conservative and are islamist would be the majority of the population, even puntland.
Ina future scenario where the secular government strays too far from islam there is the chance of a backlash.
This is unlikely though politicians are smart enough to cater to their constituents.

Majority of the population is a figure that reaches upto 75% or more. With an effective media that demonizes al-Shabaab, it's baffling how your assertion that the majority of the population sympathize with them can be correct.
