I am assuming you were either born in the West or left Somalia at a very early age.

You should take a 1 month visit to Somalia to get the biggest eye opener ever. Forget about the horrible living conditions, the thought that you can't get a McFlurry on a hot day or turn on a tap to get clean water (because a man on a donkey brings it to you in a 30 gallon plastic barrel filled with cholera bacterium). A few hours into your trip and you will see that you share nothing with these people other than ethnicity and religion. You possibly don't want to hear this but you relate more to a neo-Nazi who lives hundreds of miles away from you in a different part of the continent you live in than to a close relative from the same village or town your ancestors are from.

You may speak Somali as fluently as a Somali elder but there is nothing more painful in realizing that a conversation with a regular Western english-speaking old elderly woman will naturally go farther (not a forced one) than your own grandmother in Somalia. There is nothing to relate with. You can talk about the new movie that came out at the cinemas with your friend but can you do that with someone back home? You can't even get some geeljire's opinion on what kind of brand of deoderant is the best. These things may seem petty and stupid but these small things you don't notice are very important

I am not saying to shun your native ancestral country. But go back to the motherland and I promise you that you will start to love your "adopted" country and appreciate it much, much, much more.

Idk man. I would regale my relatives with stories of america. thats hours worth of conversation material right there. You assume that as westerers we would automatically be uninterested in what our countrymen back home have to say. The cultures of the west and somalia are very different, but that doesn't mean we are brain-dead idiots who can't hold up conversations with one another.

And as for your comment about a western english-speaking lady..i have nothing in common with them. normally they will look at me with contempt

its not only Americans Somalis its all immigrants in america i find that fascinating even the fresh off the boat immigrants who cant even speak English properly call himself a proud american patriot . I know they force kids to sing the national hymn in kindergarten that's probably it they brainwash them from a young age .

Stories about America? Hours of conversation? How about when you've finished telling all your American stories? What next? Try to strike up a conversation about how high school sucks and they will possibly respond by saying "I've never went since my dad can't afford the fees. I don't know what high school is like". And even if he did go to high school, high school life in America and in Somalia is different. A nerd in an American high school would possibly be scared half to death in going to class because of one of the jocks promised to beat him to a pulp while the Somali high school student is only scared of the teacher because he failed to memorize a chapter in the Qu'ran. You can't even relate to high school stories

I didn't say we are not interested but due to different cultures, we are different people. It has nothing to do with being brain dead.

Even if you do relate to them, you are the product of your surroundings. If you are born in America, you live and think and act like an American. Don't expect to go to a different country, in a different continent, where the demographics and way of life is completely alien to the place you lived in and expect to adapt and "feel like home". You most definently will not. They don't relate to you (for the most part) and you won't relate to them. Anything else and you are lying to yourself.


Rich-boy, I've been to Somalia four times during the summers and I speak Somali very well. In fact, I will be going to Hargeisa in a few weeks. I know what to expect. I don't hate my people or my ancestral homeland but I am not going to act fake and say that I would live there my whole life because they share my ethnicity and religion. I would never do it and I am certain 99% of people here would say the same. They won't just say it because they will be labelled as self-haters. Somali culture is not eating lahooh and sambuusa for ramadan. It's more than that.
