Arent you forgetting the most important reason why Taliban is still a factor in Afghanistan ? Taliban would've been in the dustbin of history if it wasn't for the support of Pakistan who is keeping them alive as a strategic pond. Every time the Taliban are chased they run over the border, rest, re-group and get weapons from the pakistani state and then come back fresh for more fighting. With neighbours like ours, you have to explain how they can survive .Arabman wrote:Al-Shabaab have been preparing for years. They are in this for the long haul. They aren't going to negotiate, just like the Taliban. Anyone who thinks they can be defeated or there's a military solution is completely deluded. The sole superpower along with dozens of coalition partners, military power and budget that dwarfs the one of Somalia-- failed to subdue the Taliban. Afghanistan has been through what Somalia is now starting to undergo. If you want to see where Somalia is headed a few-several years from now, look no further than Afghanistan. Afghanistan itself is headed towards a future where foreign troops leave and the Taliban come back to power. I know some would say the population supports the Taliban, while al-Shabaab are hated-- but that's what Karzai and his supporters used to say, that the population hates the Taliban.Colonel wrote:Arabman what's your take on this? How do you think this conflict can be solved?
Just this summer a Taliban commander admitted that they can't win the war. The americans will perhaps widraw most of their troops, establish a base and use even more drones in the future. So the Taliban soldiers will have to hide , never being able to fully gain a status as a government that can rule .
Shabaab will not be totaly gone, but even a state like Mexico has thousand who die every year in the drug war. It doesn't mean that the Mexican government will vanish. It means there are challenges.
Soon enough Somalia will be on its feet, and the terror group known as Shabaab will be gone like the nightmare they are.
