I know plenty of Somali Athiests/Agnostics or those who just don't care about Islam right here in Canada. A lot of Somalis here practice Islam culturally (fasting, celebrating Eid) and many are in fact not followers of the religion.

There are many Somali athiests/agnostics around but its just that they are not open about it. Either because of family/community/friends or just because they don't feel the need to blurt out their beliefs.

They are still good, loving people with morals. It doesnt change who they are.

Your religious beliefs are personal. We shouldn't expect every single ethnic Somali to follow Islam, especially when many of us live in the West.

All you need to know is Knight of wisdom aka Pinky boy aka Nigis kalar badane(as emperior would say) was our favorite bunching bag here on somalinet. He was fun guy to discuss clan politics though. He was always defending SSC or Khatumo and was always hard on somaliland, but it was all good and fun to talk about stuff. Fast forward to today as I browsed through the SOL islamic section archives, I stumbled upon a topic where he says that he no longer believes in God and had left Islam to become a non believer. I was taken back by his comments(since again I've known the guy here for few years). I thought I should share this information with those who have also inter changed views with Knight, and I think they would also like to know this information lest he makes a comeback to somalinet.

I hope that answers to 'why' I posted this.

I think it's quite the contrary. I see young people who are more religious than their parents, and who have sufficient Islamic knowledge to differentiate between culturally influenced Islam their parents follow, and the Sunnah of the Prophet (PBUH).

Humans who want to know the purpose of Life, will always question what they are taught irrespective of where they are. Young Somalis/Muslims who came/born in the West are not becoming atheist because they have access to more information, but rather because they are becoming followers ONCE again. They are merely following the latest trend in the West (their surrounding), and ultimately they become atheists who are void both of Western and Islamic reason or logic. Muslim atheist are some of the most unintelligent group of people I have ever met in my life. If they were in Somalia, or any other Muslim country they would have been among those who never once opened up their minds to ask "What is the Greatness of Allah the Most High?" Or who made Salah a ritual.

Allah will put all of us in a position to question Islam and reveal the true intentions of our hearts. Whether one fails or succeeds this test is what determines who becomes an atheist and who becomes (Remains) a Muslim.

There are plenty of non-Muslims converting to Islam each year and there are plenty of Muslims leaving Islam. It's a test of LIFE. Do not follow the sheep. Pick up a Qur'an and read it from cover to cover. Learn the attributes, Power, and wisdom of Islam (Particularly Allah). And then and only then can one decided to stay or leave. I'm personally sadden by Islamically illiterate Muslims who barely touched the surface of Islam bragging about leaving the Deen. As for those who know the deen inside out and turn away, then May Allah have Mercy on them.

I personally want everyone to be a Muslim, but the hearts of humans are not in my hands. And God already stated that “Let there be no compulsion in religion. Truth has been made clear from error. Whoever rejects false worship and believes in God has grasped the most trustworthy handhold that never breaks. And God hears and knows all things.” (Quran 2:256)


May Allah never give me the opportunity to let go of this Trustworthy Handhold. Ameen!

I have to agree with most of this. Perhaps not 90% by the 3rd generation though. Closer to 50%, maybe. No, maybe more.

Probably the most depressing thing I've read all year, but have to agree with you two. Within 50 years, there will be a thriving Somali atheist sub-culture, not to mention Somali LGBT groups.

The interesting thing is that there are prominent Arab athiests/agnostics that hold reputable positions in their community. Hussein Ibish and Asad Abu Khalil, for example. The Somali counterpart is Ayaan Xirsi and the Amal chick from Sweden, and they're despised. Is it because we're more religous? No. It's because of Somali culture. Islamnimo has become so intertwined with Somalinimo that they are basically the same thing. In effect, saying: "I'm not a Muslim anymore" is like saying "I'm not a Somali anymore".

Third generation Somalis in the west will be probably majorty of them Athiest. forxample Scandanevian countries only 3 generation away, lets say 1920s they were very religios people. today sweden norway denmark population are almost 90% of them do not believe God.. and yes God still love those athiest people . he gave them most peacefull countries which religios somalis and afghanist run to ask asylum.

i wonder why sheikhs claime if you dont worship God then god will make your life on this planet hell.. thats not true just loook Scandenvia they have highest living standard. highest life expectancy. By your argument, Muslims only believe in Islam because they're following other Muslims around them.
