Alpha,
I am for hemp but this Cali Garoob tree is a pest that does more harm than good. I seriously trying to find
some hemp seeds that I can plant some in my backyard in Somalia.

Geed Yahuud

I seen a programmer on Malaysia where they made charcoal cakes with a plant that was giving them the same problems you stated about the Garanwaa tree
The plant looked very similar to this Prosopis Juliflora

Thuganomics,
Dunno bro. But this pest must be eradicated. Its the only thing that has prospered over the 30 years.

Re: Sustainable Charcoal Production
I don't disagree at all that the plant needs to be removed, but inciting rapid and widespread charcoal production isn't the answer. The plants help against flooding and desertification. There has to be another method found.AbdiWahab252 wrote:Alpha,

Replace them.

Wow this is one haasid plantits aggressive growth leads to a monoculture, denying native plants water and sunlight, while denying its nutrients with the animals that eat its pods or its leaves

I see what you mean when you say it has to be eradicated

Alpha,
When we wipe it out, the natural flora will return. There is no space for them to regrow.

Thug,
That's the general pattern for invasive species; bullying lol. You should see what animals do. It's insane.
Abdiwahab,
If you start a non-profit to encourage the repopulating of indigenous plants in the region, I'll donate.
But it has to be quick and calculated. Otherwise, as is often the case, the plants will simply reemerge. I hope you have enough black tarps lol.

Re: Sustainable Charcoal Production
'Geed Yahuud' is the only tree I would advocate its eradication by any means necessary. The tree is useless, and as mentioned above, does more harm than good. And yeah, it grows and spreads like wild fire & makes life hard for village people in some Southern regions.
I remember back home when I was in dugsi Quraan in Shabelaha hoose, our macalin used to ask us to plant these evil trees & I never saw a tree that grows so fast. After several years when I visited in that area it took over the whole land & was about to force people out of their houses. It even made streets and alleys too narrow that you could hardly walk in between houses.
I think this idea proposed by AW is great as it stops the insane spread of this tree & its devastation on the land & helps the locals financially.

Abdiwahab,
You can probably do more than just feed goats, but I hope that works out. Would love to see some pics.
Thug,
The tree Abdiwahab's describing reads very differently. He even mentioned it's inedible for cattle.
Twist,
Eradicating the trees without replacing them will not benefit anyone. There need to be appropriate measures taken.

When it comes to plants, it's often an issue of dispersal mechanisms, rapid growth (2 years as opposed to 20), tolerating various temperature ranges, quickly adapting, and so on. But there are also cases of humans introducing exotic species. This is part of the reasons why you're asked if you're carrying any plants, foods, seeds, animals, etc when entering another country. Or, at least they should be asking you lol.kambuli wrote:The question is why was this evil tree introduced to Somali soil in the first place? Who did that![]()
I will never forget how my stomach get disturbed the day I read from Hiiraan online a guy talking about how they trade in charcoal. He said " It is difficult to get a good tree to cut now, so we use/cut down the mango trees...

Re: Sustainable Charcoal Production
Alpha yes, there has to be a replacement (though it wont be easy to get rid of this one that easy without it putting up a tough fight. Am speaking from experience) and there are good trees like geed Hindi etc that are environmentally friendly, 'beautiful' etc though it takes ages for it to grow.
