As for gudniin, I asked my cousin living in somali galbeed if she would her daughter, and she gave me an interesting answer. She said, "if I have a daughter here, then yes, and if not then no." That is the reality for the cultural customs prevalent among the somalis, as long as the environment continues then so does the cultural practices.

This is all down to the faraxs, this is done to please them. They are failures, who abuse woman and sell their daughters for camels.

In places like Sudan and Egypty that might be the case, but with somali tradition it is done because they think it must be carried out for religios reasons. Yes, I know it is wrong but that is what they think. They would say hadan lagu gudin tukan kari maysid and this has to be done before your puperty. I remember my grandmother telling me ' ayeeyo, tukan kari meysid hadaanan ku gudin'.......I said to her ' ayeeyo aniga hey qalin.

Let's not kid ourselves here ladies. It's the women who insist on carrying out this archaic practice just so they can remain in touch with 'custom'. I have seen a lot of families where the husbands explicitly and loudly told their wives to not even think of doing such things to their daughters, the wives still found a way and operated on their girls when they husbands weren't around. Not to mention, it is women who physically perform this shyt with their own hands. Maybe you should preach to them and hope your lecture is heeded because quite frankly, it is, as you said, very primitive.

thank you for pointing that out.... if any of this is to be curbed, i firmly believe the message/blame/indictment needs to reach the woman involved to perpetuate the practice. regardless of its origin and who it aims to please, this is a practice put to women by women.

i should also point out other forms of "female honor" practices that extend to other cultures like breast ironing....again done at the request of the girl's mother.

breast Ironing? I heard in west africa girls breasts being beaten with a paddle when they hit puberty so that men don't think they are developed and won't go after them.
