Although its true it has much to do with exhibition, at the same time dierntuin means zoo in dutch.
I think there r Salaale oromos with their trousers in the back
It must have been a mind blowing experience for those who are exhibited...
probably they were ashamed of it and they havent told their experience to their keens on their return.

Of course they were not slaves.
In europe there were no slavery for the last 1000 years.
Care to say few words on how your grandparents came in europe in the 20S?

xplaya I translated the language (which is dutch) and it says they were in a zoo, whether they were in there as an exhibition or not is another question.

Well they might have been exihibted in the zoo as part of africa , but the using the term in Zoo implies they were caged and treated like animals , these were free people who sighned a contract with this german contractor to do the exhibit and the entire theme was to exgerate africa and spin the "wild untamed tribes" , but to suggest these people were caged like animals.. is non sense... they were good actors and got their $$$$$

I remember reading a book on orientalism by Edward Said years ago and about how Europeans felt this unnatural compulsion to go around the world collecting indigenous people (including Somalis) for supposed exhibitions back in Europe. Essentially in an attempt to further glorify themselves as superior peoples, when in fact it was just one more way of rationalizing slavery, colonialism and their barbarity. On the surface these exhibitions were supposedly for entertainment purposes, but they had far more sinister intentions i.e. by putting these indigenous people in zoos alone obviously carried a very visible effect and implied they were so inferior that they required to be there in the first place. A ploy to legitimize all their immoral & inhumane foraging in to numerous home worlds. He who has the key to public relations holds the key to how society views its evils.

Until relatively recently, European culture was completely backwards. What an uncivilized, barbaric thing to do!
