African-Americans has a certain connotation and it applies to a certain group of people i.e. the biggest minority of American society who have no other claim to nationality other than American nationality, and are decendants of the peoples brought over as slaves from the west African coast. IMO, for clarity purposes recent immigrant groups from African countries, although they also are African, for clarity purposes, should not be labelled as African Americans but [insert nationality]-Americans. America is a nation of immigrants. African Americans and Native Americans hold a special category and place because they have no claim to nationality elsewhere on earth. To include Somalis in the African-American categorization would be categorically wrong and crude... it simply does not capture the complex layers of identity and the inherent differences between the different black communities sufficiently.


E.g:

- Italian-American
- Irish-American
- Nigerian-American
- Somali-American
- Ethiopian-American

- Native American
- African American (or Black American)

Walaalo, You can Claim whatever you want Orally but what counts is what you put down in papers. My manager knows she has one african american report to her. The police in the street knows they have stopped one african american.
